I thought American hockey fans singing O Canada even though no Canadian team was playing was a thoughtful and lovely gesture.

Where've you been? The who and why is well known. He was run down by a Islamic extremist Canadian.
That definitely sucks, and I thank him for his service and may he RIP as well.
I think the reason he isn't being talked about as much, is because no one knows the scenario behind his death. he was struck in a hit and run, but who did it and why, is a mystery. - moondawg

As a former resident of Ottawa this is very strange the emotions. I'm not Canadian but feel a strong sense of brotherhood with Canadians (except during the Winter Olympics). Ottawa is a first class city and truly beautiful and this incident won't tarnish that! Stand on Guard Canada and from my home in Chicago I'm sending well wishes. |

We're lucky on this continent, when horrible things happen there's neighboring citizens that will immediately help you out. Peace for two hundred years.

Lel, it's all fear porn. I just turn off my TV when I see this poop.
And I mean no disrespect to the young man who was killed. But it wasn't like he was a secret service agent or a Mounty. The whole thing was symbolic. The shooters were making a symbolic point. The soldier's job that day was symbolic. What I am trying to say is that this does not scare me in the slightest not do I grieve any more than I would for the old lady that was shot in my home town of Guelph a few weeks ago. - McGallagher

Some people should dump a jug of bleach and a jug of ammonia in their bath water . Not saying you are one of those people but I would understand if you were. |

Number one, using crappy buzzwords like "fear porn" doesn't make you sound sopjisticated. It makes you out to be no worse than the media you claim to find so ridiculous. I can also say I was impressed witthe Canadian medias handling of this, very restrained. Number two, its a little late to backpedal and claim you meant no disrespect when you called an active caf reservist a sort of soldier. Third I know I feel a little sad when I read about any act of violence but if you're so jaded you can't see the significance of an armed man, islamic or otherwise killing an unarmed man in cold blood at a national war memorial and then running into a parliamentary building guns a blazing well, yeah. I feel kinda bad for your parents. - PoketheBear
That is a comment heard much around my world today. How the media in Canada treated everything with a measured response. We too have competing news outlets but there never seemed like a rush to get something, anything, first.
I even found it a little disturbing that the name of the terrorist was first broadcast to Canadians by CBS News in America. Still, that information was out there for at least an hour before my (CKNW - Vancouver's largest news radio outlet) news mentioned it and only after saying multiple times that this was unconfirmed by the RCMP.
Big ups to the Penguins organization.
Big Ups to everyone here who has had thoughtful and measured conversation.

It amazes me how much support Canada has gotten after the attack in Ottawa. It has been great. The sad part is there will always be people who feel the need to minimize it or be critical of our response as a nation. Rosie odonnell is one. I had one person suggest the attack was a government set up. Absurd. We need to support the men and women in uniform wether it is police, fire, ambulance or the military. We are lucky to have them. |
