The Importance of Faceoffs
As it turns out, faceoffs can play a semi-important role in hockey. I know that statement is completely obvious, but I mean it more in terms of advanced statistics. To the naked eye, winning a draw gives your team possession of the puck and control of play, which is certainly a good thing. But when you dig deeper, you can find that these wins can add up to some tangible results. There was a study done back in 2012 by Michael Schuckers, Tom Pasquali and Jim Curro from St. Lawrence University on the importance of the faceoff in hockey. The entire study can be found here, from Stats Sports Consulting.
To quickly sum up their findings, faceoffs can have an impact on any hockey game, and on a team's overall chances to make the playoffs. There are three real interesting findings that I want to point out here, which will be relevant for this article:
76 faceoff wins at even strength are worth approximately one goal in value.
41 faceoff wins on special teams are worth approximately one goal in value.
A team that wins 60% of their faceoff draws as opposed to 50% gains approximately 12 extra goals per season, which equates to two extra wins.
Therefore, a player who can produce wins in the faceoff circle can provide tangible results for his team, in terms of goals and wins. The more faceoffs a player wins, the more his team possesses the puck, and the more his team possesses the puck, the more goals that team will score. 76 faceoff wins may seem like a lot, but players who are really good at winning draws can win a lot more than they lose. And anyone who watched this thriller from last year knows that winning faceoffs on the power play can definitely lead to goals.
Bonino wasn't horrible last year at 48.8% so I expect him to come around. Vey is gonna hurt this team at center IMO, he needs to play on the wing. |

Vey is waiver-eligible, he would very likely get claimed by a bottom feeder. I doubt they waive him after spending a 2nd round pick to acquire him. |

It's only 5 games in but I think the problems with the team are pretty much what folks have forseen:
Weak defense
No second line
faceoffs
Thankfully - two of these things can be fixed with practice or development...one with a trade. |

I think there is a difference with weak defense and a defense that hasn't figured out its system yet. The D is quite aggressive but I'm willing to wait a bit longer before proclaiming it is good or bad yet. The lack of secondary scoring and face-offs though are something most questioned and not going to fix themselves IMO. |

Retrospect, it was lousy to fail our first two real tests. That said, our SOG count in awesome, good hits..and lots of them; surgical power play, decent penalty kill. If we can play slightly better (with practice) than this, we WILL win more than we lose. A great deal more. But, I'm the page optimist, and often suffer from 'magical thinking'. |

2 different groups of management have tried to fix the secondary scoring problems, it's obvious that it's more difficult than we believe. |

Has to be addressed through the draft or Overpaid for through FA. Trading away draft pics or youth is counter productive unless getting youth back.

The second group, Linden & Benning, have had five months to address this AND they've had to deal with contracts left over from the Gillis years, it's gonna take some time!! |

They definitely deserve a shot at it, and I am not in any way suggesting it is easy to do or that this mgmt group cannot find/develop some goal scorers. I just don't think what they did this year so far (Vey/Bonino/Vrbata), have a realistic chance of being the answer.
Looking forward to watching the Utica game tonight if I can find a stream. Sounds like Gaunce on the 4th line has been quite impressive so far. For all the criticism he gets of the 1st round picks, he seems to be a very consistent player even if not flashy. |

Bonino was the best offer from the place where Kesler wanted to go, I don't fault Benning there, Vrbata will be a 30 goal scorer, again no issues there, Vey on the other hand...not impressed thus far. |

Defence is the least of my worries. Once systems and expectations are figured out things will be good.
Second line yeah that has been an issue for a long while meow.
Face-offs It might be a little early yet but every player and team has a sh!tty night in the dot once and a while but it could pose a problem in the future. If a guy like Horvat can come in and win draws I think his style of game would do well in the NHL.
Where the hell is Shinkaruk get that kid up here and lets get some goals. |
