How does a newspaper (even one as bad as the Sun-Times has become) keep someone on who would seriously suggest that?

The newspapers tend to just assign a "writer" to cover a given team—without really considering whether they're a hockey person or not. Sometimes, they will learn on the job. Other times, not so much.

And yet here we have Rick Morrissey on the 5:30 CSN show yesterday. First words out of his mouth: "Who do you choose, CC or Raanta?" (frank)ing media ... they know two things: Stir controversy and create controversy. No original thought, no comments on Raanta's play, Kaner's 2 PPG, TVR's solid rookie game, decent PK, nothing. Just trying to stir the pot.

Would he make the same statement if Derrick Rose was hurt and his replacement put up 30 points. Should Rose sit then using Rick's logic because his replacement had one good game.

As they should be. It's the posts that don't violate the code of conduct, grossly or otherwise, yet somehow still get deleted and/or result in bans that are the point of contention. Most who used to be here are unappreciative of that fact.

Well, Ogi, no offense meant toward you, but there was a post taken down yesterday that was basically asking for a long, long ban. Other than that, I'm honestly not aware of it recently.

Also, offensive PMs (by those who otherwise are keeping their stuff off the board) can result in a ban too. So some feel sympathy for them, not knowing that, yeah, they did something stupid and uncalled for. That DID happen recently.

Just FYI. it's all good otherwise.

Were there any writers besides Tim Sassone that covered the Hawks for more than a few years?

1. Dont need him right now .

2. He has to learn to play the game on this smaller ice surface.


I think later on this season the Hawks will need TT , and he will be very good when the Hawks decide to bring him up . Let him play at least 20 games on North American ice first....

To approach maudlin for a minute or two (not the cartoonist):

There is only so much hockey that you can talk - whether in the off season or during the season - only so many rumors you (not you, JJ) can make up, only so much Crawford sucks, Leddy's terrible, PP is bad....

We had a nice community here probably until after the play-offs last year, and I think it was largely because we felt that when the hockey talk slowed down, we could discuss other things: music, movies, first jobs, even a bit of politics - we'd keep coming back to see what was going on, contributing....

On game nights, we were all here because we felt like we knew each other and wanted to discuss the game. Many game nights would have 1,000 posts, page after page, hockey, jokes, put-downs, insults - we all survived and wanted to come back for more.

But now - I don't think many feel that way anymore - we have to watch what we talk about, we have to watch what we say - certainly we all (many of us) go overboard at times - but I'm not sure the "old crowd" feels like checking in to see what's going on any more. Philco, Bogie, Mo - where are they?

Now, maybe that's the way Ecklund - and JJ - want it. But, with all due respect, Eli - we never needed a referee, things never got that out of hand - and I miss the old place.
