Wow really? Sutter is not great but he s a solid two way 2nd/3rd line center... Which is what the oil need. Poulliot who may end up being the best player in the proposed deal ( top 2 d man/ pp qb potential) plus a number one... Wowwow ... Pens would probably not make that deal... Why would nt the oilers??? It's highway robbery ... - Brianandr1
Yeah not a good deal for the oil... |

Perron is a 3rd-4th line player?
Oh sorry, where are these NHL caliber Centermen coming from?
Fasth beat out Hiller for his job last year but who did you want the oilers to pick up for a goalie?
Pouliot and purcell are 3rd liners that can play good defensively, our 4th line has been awesome so far.
He went after the dmen available to him, Fayne a good pick up, Niki not so much.. Cant win them all. - Oilfan19
If the 4th line is playing so great maybe they should get more minutes. They've already got the most goals against in the NHL this year, can't get any worse.
Maybe instead of trading for Perron (another winger just what the Oilers needed!) they could have gotten a center or dman. Or maybe instead of trading Gagner for another winger (just what the Oilers needed!), they trade him for a center or dman. Or Hemsky. Or just sign better free agents.
Really it's kind of what could the Oilers have not done differently at this point.

Oilers can definitely use another 2/3 line center right now. |

1. The forth line is actually getting more minutes.
2. Its 6 games into the season, who cares about most goals against yet.
3. Didn't need a center when we got Perron and he filled a spot in which we needed on the wing.
4. Gagner fetched a 6 or 7th rounder when tampa traded him, we got a solid winger.
5. Hemsky got 2 picks, don't think we were going to get a nhl player for him
6. WOW mind blowing, sign better free agents? Why didnt we think of that? Amazing. |

Sutter is a 3rd line center which we don't need. And we don't need another D prospect, we need a current top pairing dman. Pouliot is good but not what we are looking for at the moment. Not saying value wasn't there. - Oilfan19
Sutter has been one of pittsburghs best forwards going back to last seasons playoff. He s a second line center because pittsburgh has two guys named Crosby and Malkin playing in front of him ... In addition his wingers last season were guys like tanner glass and Taylor pyatt!!! yes poulliot is a prospect ... A prospect who s ceiling is karlson ... Not saying he will become that ... But the question is what team would nt ... Plus a first ... For yak? Would it even be a debate of he was not drafted first overall??? |

again; I don't agree. I think this isn't looking at the whole picture.
when the team tore it down, the cupboards were completely empty. this has been part of the problem. not only did we sell off any nhl level assets that we didn't want, we didn't have anything in the cupboards outside of eberle (hall hadn't been drafted yet at rebuild start--trade deadline 2010) to look forward to.
and while Prendergast was an absolute disaster of a head scout, (a direct result of being a bad team and having nothing in the cupboards. he probably made 2 maybe 3 quality picks in 15 years (hemsky/smyth) and the rest total misses) he was let go prior to this teardown and Macgregor hired. and I don't think hes (Macgregor) part of the issue at all. picks take time. we'll see.
outside of the obvious high picks that anyone could've done, hes made many promising picks. klefbom, marincin (who is developing beautifully), has added size in the surprising yakimov. khaira, chase are promising etc.
of course none of these are sure things, but the point is, there has been a change.
but its still gonna take time for nurse, klefbom etc to develop, because behind our core we have some decent depth finally, but not the studs we need.
player development could be argued tho. but I also don't think the oilers have much options in some spots to not play those kids. hall may have been our best player his rookie year. nuge had more points in 20 less games played than the next best rookie. I do think in a perfect world it woulda been nice to send some of them back. but another thing is, how many first overalls get sent down? the oilers certainly didn't invent this - hugefemale dog77
Thats the beauty of sports, people disagree. I hate it when people say use the Red Wings model but take a look at how they do things. They have nobody on their team drafted in the past 3 years despite having arguably the best scoring prospects in hockey in Mantha. Guys like Jurco are only now making the team because the Wings Develop their guys properly.
Closer to home I can look at the Habs. Their amateur scouting has been terrific but their pro scouting and player development was horrendous until Bergevin took over. Now the team uses patience and development as key and outright refuses to rush someone unless they are ready. They young guys like Ribeiro, Hainsey, McDonaugh, for aging veterans and then left kids like Kostitsyn or Latendresse on their own in a crazy market, it was pathetic.
Times have changed here because of the ship Bergevin run. He has the right people, makes the right decisions because he has invested heavily in his team, his scouting and development.
Oilers need a mamjor shakeup because their trades are ridiculously bad, they are making the wrong decisions with the players they are acquiring and IMO rushing kids way too early. Dreisatl for instance has to be sent back down, something they should have done with RNH and they need to start making moves to support these crazy talented kids with top 6 veterans

This is correct ... However as a pens fan I like sutter ( I'm in the minority) and don't want to make that deal ... I just think it has great value for the oilers
I also want to point out how good he has looked this season and in last seasons playoffs when surrounded with quality wingers... |

Which trades were so bad?
All Mac T has done is move mid level picks, moved Dubnyk for Hendricks, and MPS for Perron?

He could barely hold onto a 2nd line center spot in Carolina. A role he had by default. Hes a third line center at best. |

So the Oilers shouldn't have traded for wingers and just ran with Gazdic, Pitlick and Lander on the wings instead? |

I seem to remember Penguins fans complaining that Sutter is neither a scorer or a physical player. This guy is probably just dressing him up a bit to make him seem better than he is to validate his point . I have no idea, I don't follow the Penguins outside the 1st or 2nd rounds of the playoffs, TBH. |

Whatever man, it's your team. If your happy with the job MacTavish has done that's great.
In my opinion, until the Oilers completely wipe clean the whole front office and the whole system. No matter how many high draft picks they get they're still going to suck because they play like this:
Good team defense is the bare minimum in the NHL these days. Nobody in Edmonton has seemed to realize this for a long long time. Until you get a front office that demands it, a coach that teaches it, and players that play it you can't even begin to compete. |
