Have you thought any more about the Franson for Nugent-Hopkins proposal? - Aetherial

After reading these posts, it's pretty clear to me that a lot of people do not understand how sports really are. The main purpose of a team game is finding the RIGHT players for the RIGHT system and who ALL play well together.
Edmonton and Philadelphia are in very similar situations and have been. Trading a name for a couple other names almost never works, just like signing a free agent because he scored a lot on another team. Player performance and stats are directly affected by teammates, system and coaching philosophy. A 50 goal scorer on one team can easily become a 30 goal guy on many other teams.
Right now the problem with Edmonton, and Philadelphia, is they do not have a clear cut identity or direction. A team with just skill will not win, a team with just toughness will not win, a team that is balanced and know how to play together will win and probably even beat all-star teams thrown together.
Teams that are good...Chicago, Boston, LA, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, etc don't have all-star lineups, but when new players get added are taught the ways and blend in as if they are top players. Detroit did it for more of a decade. Organizations that find success should pass that success through their players as if it's culture. The bad organizations do not.
Teams that draft well can't just be called lucky because they obviously know what they need, what they look for and take it. |

You were making sense till you said "Teams that are good...Chicago, Boston, LA, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, etc don't have all-star lineups".
These teams are stacked with All Stars!! Now I'm not so sure you know what you're talking about.

There's a difference between having some elite players on the team and having an all-star lineup. Like I stated prior, good teams get elevated play from players who get taught how to play correctly.
If you don't mind, I would love for you to pick a team and break down their stacked all-star lineup. Actually you kind of proved my point because none of those teams are "stacked", they have the right players to complement each other.
EDIT: Detroit is always an incredible example. Their unsung heroes...Maltby, McCarthy, etc. How many "cast-aways" have they signed that ended up playing well for the team? The Bertuzzi's of the league? |

Nobody. The Oilers should trade nobody.
You never trade from a position of weakness and right now, the Oilers are in a position of weakness. Trading Eberle, RNH or Hall is just down right stupid and trading Yakupov right now is just as stupid because his value just isn't high enough to match his potential.
What they really need is a goalie who can carry the team but that shouldn't cost them any one of their big guys. A guy like Martin Jones or maybe Cam Ward should be what they are looking for. |

I know what you're saying tho you worded it poorly . Teams like Chicago and have a stacked 'core' complimented with effective players that play supporting roles and compliment the talented players that the team has been built around.
It also helps when you have the ability to sign a Marian Hossa type to not be the centrepiece , but a great addition. |

Seems to be the case.... the oilers arnt the only team to get off to a slow start but are the only team the needs to make a trade.... - HouseArrest187
I don't think it counts as a slow start anymore, when it's been 5+ years of the same |

Honestly what is the difference between a stacked core say like Chicago and the Islanders...
Execution, that is it. Every team truly have players that could potentially become great, but don't get recognized unless the whole team plays well.
How many fans really really knew Kopitar until he won a cup or LA finally started to make the playoffs. The exceptions only seem to be players on bad teams, BUT they score a lot...Erik Karlsson? |

You know he can face a lot of shots and still put up decent numbers and a change of scenary would be nice for him. Probably comes a lot cheaper than anybody else out there with his kind of pedigree. |

I partially agree. If those assets are not valued as high as they should be then maybe look at trading our next couple of firsts? Hell, it sure looks to me that those picks highest value is the moment before the draft and 7 years later when that player is his prime . |
