It is complicated though... If a potential trial takes a year plus to get underway, that puts the team and the individual in a untenable position.

For the team, under the current system, his salary (and roster spot I believe) count against the cap and roster max. Having to carry a dead roster spot and dead cap space for a season plus isn't fair to them or anyone else on that team, even if he is guilty. And on a cap ceiling team, it can even lead to them having to make a roster move that really hurts the franchise.

And for Voynov, if he's innocent, that is a season plus that he can never get back. Obviously if he is guilty, then who the hell cares about that. And he has more years left on his deal, but imagine if it was a boaderline NHL'er in a contract year who was proved innocent... it could easily end his NHL career.

The League/NHLPA have to quickly come together and figure out a solution to this that makes sense. There has to be like an LTIR solution if they are going to keep him out until it's decided by the courts. You'd think there would also have to be a way for a team to terminate a contract of a player convicted of a violent crime.

The vibe I get is that this becomes an extended ordeal, the NHL and NHLPA will discuss a cap solution for the Kings. I think we'll know more before the December 1 hearing.

I agree.. and at that point, the league will probably know a good deal about the evidence that the state has as well.

I got a legit question to people who read enough of the other blogs.

Any other fanbases looking at/wanting to acquire Martin? Just curious, I havn't noticed it, but I have been really slacking off on reading other bloggers lately.

Nobody is clamoring for Paul Mart. He's not flashy, not a big point producer, but it obviously doesn't matter because a GM will know his worth and abilities. When I saw that guy make a comment about "taking him off our hands" I thought that was a pretty good indication that fans don't really know how good of a player he is. That's why I always avoid the "potential deals" people throw out there. Fans always over value their own players.

Maybe I missed it, but has Voynov (or more accurately his lawyers) made any kind of statement? Usually you get the "I'm innocent" or "let the facts play out" spiel, but I don't remember reading anything which to me is pointing to him having done something.

Source ?in the state of California the victim does not need to press charges, the DA can do it anyway.

I have no source, which is why I said, "I think," as opposed to, "I know. Also, the NHL operates outside of the jurisdiction of California, so I'm not sure how the two are related. Just like the NFL and Ray Rice, there were separate consequences handed out by the local government and his employer. Lastly, you're talking about pressing charges where I'm talking about wage garnishment without any criminal conviction which are, again, 2 different (yet related) things.

I think most teams would want to acquire Paul Martin. However, I doubt many teams are lining up offering fair value for him at this point.
