Having more fans among the Norris voters doesn't necessarily make you better. It's the big market effect.

Giordano finished 10th.

How is this possibly trolling? Giordano not only has McDonagh beat in all of the same categories as Brodie, but he's also a better penalty killer, a better offensive threat, plays more minutes, and has a much stronger impact on his team's success. He came in 10th, despite missing 18 games.

Gio is a legitimate top 10 defenseman in this league, and a case could credibly be made that he's right near the top of that group.

Okay first off let's be clear here, Gio was a top 10 defenseman in the league last year. But before last year? He was great, but not elite.

You're telling me that last season the Flames had a top 5 defender in the league in Gio and a top 10 defender in the league in Brodie on the team but still finished 27th in the league in standings and 23rd in the league in GA due to their great play?

McDonagh has anchored the Rangers defense to an ECF run, a 2nd round berth, and a SCF run in the last 3 years. The Rangers have won more playoff series than any other North American professional sports team in the past 3 years other than the LA Kings and Miami Heat in large part due to McDonagh. Brodie and Gio have combined for a total of 4 career playoff games between them and Gio is 6 years old than McDonagh.

That's exactly what I'm saying.

Unfortunately for the Flames, those guys can only play about 25 minutes a night. When they were on the ice, (especially when Mikael Backlund was on the ice at the same time) the team was actually elite-level good. The problem was that when they were off the ice, the team was a complete dumpster fire.

Here's a thorough explanation if you don't find me credible enough...

The 63.7% Corsi that the three of them generate together is as good as any trio in the league including Bergeron-Chara-Hamilton, Toews-Keith-Seabrook, and Doughty-Muzzin-Kopitar.

They're amazingly underrated.

yup they did. He was hurt for a large portion of the season and put up numbers that would have made him a top D on any team if he was healthy last year.

And without him, and even wideman for a long period of time Brodie carried the team on his own. For a young player thats an impressive thing to do.

Using playoff games as your argument is pretty weak. Look at the make up of the two teams. Calgary in no way has close to the list of big names on it as the bought NYR consistently has passing through it. Gio is probably one of the main reasons the flames are competitive day in and out lately (just like Kipper and Iggy were for the decade before that). Mcdonagh is not the only reason for the NYR success, so you'r ever inflating his abilities by forgetting his support cast.

that pretty much sums it up. They are pulling off numbers like this on a pretty low-level team....thats very impressive.

It's funny...I remember over the summer there was a blog that said Zajac and Jagr as a duo were just as good if not better than other top duos in this league such as Getzlaf and Perry, Benn and Seguin, Toews and Hossa, the Sedin twins, etc. because of Corsi. This Corsi stuff must be one hell of a drug.

McDonagh finished 8th in the Norris voting.

Annnnd a few years ago Subban finished 1st... Is Norris voting really the only gauge you have as to who is a good defenseman?

I remember the article. I believe it was talking about one aspect of their game, and Todd even implied that it should be taken with a grain of salt.
