Right Handed Shot dman, strong point of his game is he hits like a truck, good 3rd pairing guy but just doesnt stay healthy
- DDM-Coga

Health and Pens do not go well together so he'd be hurt in his 1st shift. For salary cap purposes I understand the need to include him.

Im still on the Martin for McGinn deal if the Avs blow another lead in the 3rd period. But I would want to Send a dman with him too. Could McGinn and Ryan Wilson (UFA) for Martin and a small kicker work out?
- DDM-Coga

The Avs would have to eat a little salary with that deal: like 200k to make the cap hits equal. That's an intriguing trade. Penguins could always flip Wilson for picks and get the corresponding cap relief.

Why would Tampa make that trade? They have a very good D already.
- usethe1-2-2

I didn't say hey lets debate why Tampa would make this trade I asked a simple question I think deserves an answer not a ?

We have such a log jam at D there would be no reason to do so. I am starting to like the idea of stealing McGinn from you guys though

I was thinking if you guys had a winger to toss into the deal to make the cap hits work. A guy like Comeau for example

But serious answer, no. Paul Martin for legit top six or bust. Young top six players I would take would have to be true wingers on the bigger side (Nino is my favorite choice right now)

I like McGinn but I just dont think he has enough value for a top 4, maybe even top 2 defenseman.

I might consider something like Sutter for McGinn. But I dont think that's what COL is looking for, eh?

Just read the Stars are down a D man for the season possibly the playoffs due to a laceration from Umberger. Not sure what their F depth is, but they will be in the market.

The issue with Martin's value is his FA status next season. Who on earth would give up a young top 6 forward for perhaps 1 season of Martin. Maybe I'm wrong but has there been a trade recently similar to that?

Its not that crazy, the Avs third line is pretty bad outside Tangs(1 good game) and Mitchell. To get a Right handed Cetner is appealing, Mitchell can play LW.

A team that is deep at forward and needs D would do that. A team that likes their chances at resigning him would do that, but why trade Martin for anything less? If you can't get true value for him you keep him. Find other ways to strengthen your roster.

I think if Martin would wave to go to Edmonton a trade with them will have already happened.

I'd like to see a trade with Edmonton personally, I think we each have what the other needs. Sutter + dman prospect. I would go for Yakupov, I watch a lot of Edmonton games and Yak is always putting in the effort. Perron is nice, but the ceiling for Yak is very high, especially when he can learn next to Sid and Geno. Yak plays with that high tempo that Sid plays with and I'd like more of it.

If we're trading with LA, isn't Mike Richards playing 4th line? I'd target him, same salary as Martin.

- stackthepads

With Yak's, there is potential of receiving a 50 goal scorer if hes next to 87 or 71. But I think we don't have the pieces that EDM would want. I'm sure it's a high price-tag.

Richards is quite $5+ Million per season for like 5 more seasons....

I like the idea of mcginn, but I don't like the idea of Wilson coming back. I'd love a Martin for mcginn + a little extra. Then the pens could always turn around and trade sutter+ to the oilers for Perron.

Bennett and mcginn could take turns on the 2nd line to see who fits better in that spot

What I also love is that 5/6 of the top 6 guys are 28 or younger

Not a chance that deal gets made, keep dreaming though. LA has far more than enough depth at D to handle the loss of Voynov. Schultz, Forbort, or others can take over short term (likely Schultz) and McNabb will stay in the lineup long term. Muzzin will be back soon, a panic move like that is not what got Lombardi the team he has today, so why start?

There are currently 0 teams deep at forward that would trade a young top 6 winger for Martin. You know how I know that? He's still on the roster. I don't disagree with the 2nd part I'm on board for letting him play out this season.

Reason why I wanted to add a guy like Wilson is that Avs already have 8 dmen on their roster on 1 way contracts, adding another in Martin they would have to chance someone going down via waivers or have to trade away another guy in a seperate deal.

Unless you want to take a Nate Guenin just so you can healthy scratch him or send him down via waivers yourself haha

I like that they are young and pretty good value. I would definitely try to get more than just McGinn though because I don't think his value is equal to Martin. I like McGinn's game but he seems a bit like yet another really good third liner we would be forcing to play top 6. Kapanen will jump in the mix eventually though, as well.

McGinn is $3M for this year and next.
Perron is $3.8M for this year and next.

I suppose another veteran defender wouldn't hurt, I just hate the idea of losing Martin and then blocking our blue chip d prospects. Martin for McGinn plus another forward/forward porspect would be preferable....dont know who fits that category other than Talbot, which I dont see happening.

EDIT -- though if you do need to waive Wilson, or he remains injured as you pointed out, at least he has his blogging career....

Last year there were only 3 players that scored 40+g. With 87 and 71 good for 30-40, PH 30+, even if Yak was realistically capable of 40+, I just don't see it happening or even needed. I don't think it would be worth over paying for, a solid 30g scorer would be ideal for what the Pens would have to give up.

Currently, there are a few, but you don't have to make a trade right away. Sometimes teams like to evaluate their roster before making large moves. You people tend to beleive that deals don't happen in November and December. It's either deadline, draft day, or training camp.

One injury changes everything. Dallas now down a D for the season. They have great forward depth.

Just be patient. He is here now, he might not be in January if Ehrhoff does sign an extension and teams come calling.
