Based on merit of play I would agree. But if this happens, how will the JVR trade be rationalized then?
- PLindbergh31

Agreed. For some reason, in all sports, there's a predetermined pecking order (with few exceptions). For instance, it would have been in the Phillies' best interests to staple Ryan Howard's ass to the bench and use him as a pinch hitter all season and let Ruf or someone else play first. But that's wasn't gonna happen.

Yup. Contracts/extenuating circumstances be damned. Play the best guys. The fact we are debating N. Schultz a career journeyman and L. Schenn a top 5 draft pick is a pretty sorry state of affairs.

They won't bench Streit because they need his shot and PP skills, but he has made some awful plays so far. Some bad turnovers and the Benn goal where he drifted from the crease to behind the goal line leaving Mason alone with Benn were very frustrating to watch.

He has a reduced role on a club with insane depth. You can't ignore that when he was here as the 1C, he was very good and the team was successful with he and Carter.
- Hextall271

I know, he is still a very good player.

The entire second period was very frustrating.

Streit is pretty bad in his own end. But he's crucial to the PP, and he can make a pretty good first pass. He also doesn't skate like he has a piano strapped to his back.

I think Streit is the least of the defense worries. His role is move the puck and produce points. We know his d will be spotty sometimes. Also guys who have the puck more will always have more turnovers. Just how the odds work.

On a positive it is nice to see his cannon on the PP creating rebounds. As much I loved Kimmo he couldn't really fire the bomb from out there so no one resepcted his shot.

Streit is one of their better current defenseman. It would be tough to bench him under any scenario. Even if he was having a bad year, it would be tough to bench him. It would be tough to even limit his minutes. Thats how desperate this team is

Probably on a line w/ the ghost of Olli Jokinen.

Kimmo didn't have canon (but man, Ghost sure does) but he had an accurate shot, and was very good at getting it through. Streit gets more than his fair share blocked.

One thing I noticed about Streit on the PP is his pass catching. He seems to have a bit of an issue when pucks are passed back to him, they seem to slip off his stick easily.

I really have no issue from what I've seen from streit's work as the PP QB. Timonen was solid and did get the shot through, but Striet's been solid... I think the PP is clipping along at 31%.. I think that's the least of our worries so far this season.

They'll use advanced stats to determine the worst Corsi and place him with Schenn.

My point, which was not expressed very well at all, is that Streit can be better defensively.

We saw his A game towards the end of last season and in the NYRs series.

He has been good as expected on the PP but I hope his D side of the game comes back to that level.

I can live with a turnover or two from a guy carrying the puck a lot, that is just going to happen.

But the spin o Rama at the offensive blue line when he is the last guy back, and abandoning the slot to drift below the goal line, when the other defenseman is already back there ...

Well he has to be better then that.

I think he is better when the team D is better, which is what we saw at the end of last year...like the rest of our D men, they are not going ot shut down a line by themselves...

I agree... we really need him to be at that level. It sucks that Timonen is gone, but I think a lot of the Dmen have more to contribute. The entire team can play better and did the second half of last year. That's what I expect and hope for. If that's the case, they'll be in the mix for a playoff spot and then Hexy can see if any deals make sense at the deadline from a stronger dealing position.. Can't always look for help from outside the org.

They can do it like the NFL and just change their minds based on public outrage

Certainly true.

Team D is very much an ongoing work of progress for this team.
Seems like a constant battle to improve this going back several years.
