If that's their asking price, I doubt he moves.
- jmatchett383

Right now, Buffalo has no reason to lower the price. They control Myers for several more seasons, he's still young enough that he could be a piece of the puzzle moving forward, and they're basically rebuilding.

There's really no reason they'd have to move Myers unless they got exactly what they wanted. It's not like Vanek, where he's a pending UFA or anything.

Thanks, but I'm fully aware of what a handshake deal is. I don't think one existed. I think all that existed, is that they would table the negotiations until after the season, because they could not come to an agreement during the season. I think all that they agreed to was mutual interest, and that both sides felt the deal would get done in the off season.
I think Holmgren felt like he could get Carle to take less then what Carle wanted. And I think at some point, Holmgren changed course and decided to pursue Suter. And then Carle went to the market and took the TB deal.

- MJL

So hence Holmgren miscalculated the market. Ended up with neither defenseman, and yolk on the brow!

That is what a handshake deal is. A deal that is agreed upon by the individuals in principle but one that has yet to be committed to paper and finalized. Example:

"Briere, how'd you like 7 years at $6.5M with a full NMC?"
"Sounds good."
"Okay, cool. We just have to wait until July 1st."

Carle probably said "WHOA did you guys see Wideman's deal??? I want more $$$" and then Homer said "Hold on" and went after Suter. Carle was like "nvm I'm hitting the pool. Later...much" and signed with TB.
- NickTheKid87

My guess is that is almost exactly what happened. Both sides saw that deal and said, wait a minute.

From Carle's end, Wideman was a similar or even lesser player making a nice payday. Carle could certainly expect to match or beat Wideman's deal on the open market.

From the Flyers' end, there's a chance to say, well, if we're going to end up paying $5.5mm for Carle, why not go another $1-$1.5mm higher and get Suter or Weber?

I think it had more to do with the market changing after the Wideman deal more than Holmgren lowballing him.

I think a player agent already knows ball park what the market is going to be in the off season. I think at one point Carle was willing to take a little less to stay with the Flyers, but once the Flyers kept Carle hanging, he looked out for himself.

1. Flyers had a handshake deal with the Carle camp into June
2. Wideman signed his deal with Calgary about week prior to free agency
3. Carle's agent's eyes lit up and said, wait we want more money now
4. Holmgren, pissed, said fine go find it. We'll look elsewhere.
5. Carle gets his payday from Tampa, Suter chooses to join his buddy Parise in Minnesota.

Maybe Holmgren flat out saying it was a below market deal pissed him off

Both Schenns + a pick/ prospect? I mean, we can do nothing and win 30 games this year or improve, compete, and lay good groundwork for the youthful D men in the system. With those that depart after this season, we have room for 2 if we keep 7 D on the roster.

The Flyers, and Carle and his agent know what the market is going to be in July. In the same way that McDonald's agent knew what the market was going to be for his player during negotiations with the Flyers well before free agency.

I think that giving up a young forward and picks for a guy who's regressed every year since his rookie season is a bad idea.

So all parties foresaw Calgary overpaying Wideman and that had no effect on the market for comparable/better players?

You should go into real estate.

No need for a Crystal Ball, just treat every opinion you have as undisputed fact.

You forgot to argumentatively dispute all reason and facts that are not presented in documented video as complete heresay and conjecture if they do not support your stance.

Might be late, but Stars defenseman Patrick Nemeth out for season after getting cut by RJ Umberger's skate Saturday night. That looked scary, but I didn't expect him to be out that long. Hopefully he can recover fully and it won't impact him over the long haul

What's the word on Dupuis? I saw him go off on a stretcher last week. Looked scary. How long is he out?
