Bellemare would need to move to wing with Vinny healthy soon.

What is the ratio of speculations to conjectures?
- jmatchett383

It's the same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns.

On locker cleanout day 2012, Paul Holmgren flat out said they had an understanding with the Carle camp and it was for "below market value" of what Carle could get elsewhere.
- bmeltzer

That's pretty strong evidence. At least stronger evidence than the contrary.

The whole Flyers/Cleary/Gagne thing never happened. Lack of physical evidence despite all kinds of statements and reports means there's no proof that it ever happened, so I will go against the grain and say it's all a myth.

I remember Holmgren saying that. I beleive that both sides at that point felt that a deal would get done. I don't beleive that they had a deal done in principle. I beleive that they could not come to an agreement during the season, and agreed to table it to the end of the season. And I think the Flyers decision to pursue Suter is what triggered Carle to look elsewhere.

Not only did it not happen, but I believe something else happened based on similar speculation and if you think otherwise than you are an uninformed dope.

It's evidence of what Holmgren's thoughts were at the time. Things can change. We also saw that with the Gagne situation. A deal is not done until it is signed.

I like him, too. And honestly, if they could trade L. Schenn or Grossmann for him and sign him for 2 or 3 years at $4.5mm, Giddyap.

But he will cost more and likely demand a deal similar to MacDonald.

- Jsaquella

Jsaq- could we get Tyler Myers for both Schenns...or would it be equitable? Buffalo has cap room. It saves us about half a million. Or would we have to offer more? Next year :

That is what a handshake deal is. A deal that is agreed upon by the individuals in principle but one that has yet to be committed to paper and finalized. Example:

"Briere, how'd you like 7 years at $6.5M with a full NMC?"
"Sounds good."
"Okay, cool. We just have to wait until July 1st."

The Flyers and Carle basically had a deal worked out, then the team decided to court Suter (whom they had no shot at getting but took their best shot) and told Carle to wait. At that point, they ended up with neither one.
- bmeltzer

That's my understanding, as well. I had read that the deal was worked out prior to the end of the season and the Flyers had to wait until July 1st because the Grossmann extension took up most of their remaining tagging space.

Grossmann was signed to the new deal after the trade deadline, meaning the only way to clear tagging space was to either run a guy through waivers and trade him or wait until after the playoffs and swing a deal. Until Wideman signed with Calgary on June 27th, there was really no need for Carle or the Flyers to change their mind on the handshake deal, was there? It's not as if Suter hitting UFA was any kind of secret.

No idea. I know that reliable folks have reported that the Red Wings asked about Myers and the price was Anthony Mantha +. If that's the case, I'd have to guess they'd ask for more than the Schenns.

Carle probably said "WHOA did you guys see Wideman's deal??? I want more $$$" and then Homer said "Hold on" and went after Suter. Carle was like "nvm I'm hitting the pool. Later...much" and signed with TB.

Thanks, but I'm fully aware of what a handshake deal is. I don't think one existed. I think all that existed, is that they would table the negotiations until after the season, because they could not come to an agreement during the season. I think all that they agreed to was mutual interest, and that both sides felt the deal would get done in the off season.
I think Holmgren felt like he could get Carle to take less then what Carle wanted. And I think at some point, Holmgren changed course and decided to pursue Suter. And then Carle went to the market and took the TB deal.
