Well said, and your right. It is what it is though, were stuck with what we got.
You know, in all the years I have been following the Leafs, we haven't once done a proper rebuild.
Many Gm's have come and gone but not one has blown it up and rebuild through proper drafting and then hanging on and training those draft picks.
Teams us fans laughed at over the years for being bottam feeders, drafted well and passed us.
People laugh at Buffalo now, wait a few years and they will dominate us. We seem to be content with trying the band aid approach to try and sneak into the playoffs for a few games of playoff money instead of the big picture of building a Stanley Cup contender.
I think Shanahan will change some things. (or at least I am hoping so) - sparky
If Burke had of done what he should have - and what he was advertised as being the right guy to do - the Leafs would just now be coming out of the darnkenss and ready to turn things around. There's always a shortcut, and I truly believe it comes down to the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" mentality in Toronto - fans want a re-build but don't have the patience to sit through 5 years of losing; media likes to poke holes at the team too much and would rather tell the fanbase it's needed than actually endure it - no carrot for them at the end of that time - what will they write the negative articles about a good team?
I hope Shannahan will make a difference - always too much hope for greatness and not enough reality as a Leafs fan. |

In fairness, we have our 2011 and 2012 1st rounders in the lineup right now. Gauthier will play on this team at some point and Nylander looks like he could be a good one too. Kadri, Leo, Frattin, Reimer are all our picks. Leivo too, who made the team and an injury threw a wrench into the plan. So they are starting to take the appropriate route.
Still, add Seguin and Hamilton to this group and YIKES. - TheThrill
Thanks a lot, you would have to mention a trade I hated from the get go. What you mentioned about 2022 and 2012 drafts is one of the reasons I like Nonis is because of his patience and so far not trading away first rounders (yet). Gauthier no doubt will be a third line centre for us for along time. We went for the home run swing with Nylander and I hope it works out. He certainly has the skills, just hope the size doesn't effect him.
But being a bubble team, and drafting in that position won't get us a top blue chipper (unless we just plain luck out). I would much rather miss the playoffs by being dead last in the league then missing it by one point.

Absolutely agree. Especially this year.
Well, I just saw that Randy kept Phaneuf with Franson at practice so it may not be such a stretch! |

When did Gauthier's best case scenario become a sure thing?
I, for one, am no fan of Gauthier and I don't believe he was the right pick for the Leafs. At all. |

What choice would the fans have if we did do a rebuild? The fans have been watching a very average to poor team for years. The arena would still be full even if we lost 20 games in a row.
At least the fans would see the plan. The draft is about as exiting time as there is during the off season. Imagine the exitment if we had a few first rounders, lottery pick, first over all etc that day. I could stomach losing knowing we had some blue chip franchise type players in the pipeline. Knowing the end to being a joke team would be coming to an end soon instead of another year of not knowing what the hell we got.
As far as Shanahan, I think as I mentioned this morning that he is grooming himself to be the next GM. I think right now he is a listening and watching maching trying to learn as much as he can. I think he also talks and gets advice from outside the organization from people he knows and trusts, like Stevie Y in Tampa. I wonder if Nonis is actually a lame duck GM right now.
