Hopefully, the Flyers can start turning things around tonight. Obviously, Simmonds has been an absolute beast so far. Giroux and Vorachek have played well. And, I see improvement out of Couturier. But, they really lack skill and size beyond that up front. I have one question - why did they give up on Mcginn? He was a big forward by their standards (over 200 lbs) and had some skill scoring around the net when he did get some playing time. He's playing about 11 minutes a game for San Jose, a much better team than the Flyers. Why do the Flyers feel the need to go with smaller forwards like Akeeson or a Raffle who are not very physical and do not score very much over a guy like Mcginn. And, he was relatively young.. I cannot understand why they wouldn't try to develop him. Why are they so fixated on smaller forwards?

Raffl is a physical player, and a much better player then McGinn is.

He's a much better fit for the Sharks. They have a VERY strong and balanced group of forwards. They were just looking to add a little grit. Flyers need more speed and puck carriers imo. I would rather have Akeson than McGinn. I just feel he fits a need more than McGinn did.

I think Raffl is just a better overall player who offers the team some desperately needed versatility.

I agree, I see Akeson as having more raw skills then McGinn

Yeah. Neither are anything defensively either. In a vacuum, I would still rather have Akeson because I feel skilled players are more valuable than a grinder, but I could see why a team like the Sharks was interested in McGinn.

I don't agree with you. I don't see him as being that physical or much better than Ncginn. I guess we will see this year because it looks like Mcginn is going to get plenty of ice time. To me, they have a lot of guys like Raffle- an under 200l lb forward without much of a scoring touch. He's decent defensively and I guess that's the rationale for playing him. But, he's not great in the corners because of his size and he's not much of a scorer. It's just ironic how Mcginn can crack the Sharks lineup but did not fit into the Flyers' plans.

Yeah Raffl is the Flyers best puck pursuit forward IMO. Showed some nice finish as well on one of the best goalies in the world the other night.

Small sample size but so far through 4 games, McGinn has 2 hits. Raffl has 7 hits. And as far as who is a better player, it's not even close in my view. Raffl's scoring touch is there, and that will develop later. Right now, he is a very good skater, very strong on the puck and on the forecheck. And good defensively. Raffl came from a lower tier European team to the NHL last year. And he posted 9 goals and 13 assists. So he does have scoring ability. McGinn is not a big loss.

It's saturday night, can't you just let the major networks & ESPN force feed you college ball? Why stress yourself out over the Philadelphia Flyers?

Akeson does have skills, but he's small and a little slow. I actually think McGinn has better hands around the net and could develop into a decent power forward. The way I look it is this - but for a miracle, the Flyers are not going to win the cup this year. So, why not go with young players and try to develop them. Of course, there are going to be growing pains with young players - turnovers, bad penalties, missed assignments, etc. but that is how they learn. But, the Flyers need to be way more patient with young players.

I agree the Flyers do need to be more patient with their young players. It'd be nice to see a consistent approach to players as well. Benching some for infractions and letting other slide sends a horrible message IMO.

In terms of puck skills and hands, McGinn is no where near the level of the puck skills that Akeson has.

Flyers didn't feel that McGinn was a fit for their team. Right or wrong. So they moved him rather then stop his career from moving forward if he has a chance with another team. He more then had his shot with the Flyers.
