Personally I think if you aren't puking on kids then you're not a real fan. No dedication, IMHO.

The irony lies in the fact that before the lottery happened, Columbus, having the worst record in the NHL that year, were expected to get the first pick/draft Yaks. Circumstances (Oilers winning the lottery) changed that, and him ending up in Columbus would be ironic.

For christs sake, ignring the fact that them being expected to draft him and trading for him years later are two sperate situations its still wouldn't be ironic if he ended up playing there. At no point would anything be an unexpected or opposite result for anyone. Edmonton won the lottery and picked him as expected. If they trade him there its still not opposite or unexpected, it would be a choice and the expected result would be him ending up in Columbus.

I agree with you if you want to break it down into a bunch of separate events then no, none of them are inherently ironic on their own. However, irony can be present, when you look at the big picture. Where in, Yakupov was not expected to end up in Columbus (given that they lost the lottery). Him ending up there creates irony.
