I agree. It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. Right? |

No it doesn't have to revolve around an action, a situation can exist in contrast to what was expected and be ironic.
I.E. It would be ironic if someone was bragging about flying first class, and then got bumped to economy. - ehabs9
The action there would be flying first class, they ment to fly first class and ended up in economy.. The opposite. The action with this would be drafting Yakapov, first of all Edmonton ment to draft him, and they did. Getting traded to a team that almost had the 1st pick isn't the opposite and again, they would be meaning to do it. |

Because Dallas Eakins thought it would be smart to make the 18 year old 1st overall scoring star the only forward on the team defensively responsible. - 1979AD
(frank) Eakins is such an idiot. But apparently he still has fans in Edmonton. Thought it was obvious to anyone with any kind of hockey sense to how this idiot is ruining our kids.
Apparently not though. |

I'm starting to think you're trolling.
Situational irony can revolve around an action that results in a contrasting outcome, or a state of affairs/event that is contrary to what one expected.
Yakupov ending up in Columbus is an event in contrast to what everyone expected
You're just proving that all you did was read the definition you posted. Again it does not have to be centred on someone's actions |

You guys have to do something though. I'm not trying to be a Richard but holy poop the fact the oilers still can't put together a good hockey game after drafting so high for so many years, and having so many assets to build a team around/with is mind blowing.
I know mctavish hasn't had a lot of time yet, but unfortunately he inherited the length of time that cloud has been hanging over the team. At this point there's so much to work with, a semi-knowledgable hockey fan should be able to be GM and ice a competitive team. - ehabs9
oh oh oh, can I try ? |

You just said there didn't have to be an action now your posting a defintion about an action and explanation about how the action was not what was expected... Lots of unexpected things happen that are not ironic. This is the dumbest agrument I have ever been in. The only two things that could be the action here are drafting him or trading him... Once they had the first pick everyone expected them to draft him, and if they traded him to columbus, I'm pretty sure they would expect him to go to Columbus... Therefore, not ironic. |

Could Brodeur step-in for the Avs? I think that would be cool, both Roy and Brodeur on the same team, lol. Or even better Roy stepping in and playing a few. - Gretz2Kurri

It's not the action of him going to Columbus that's ironic, it's him being there that's ironic. For crying out loud. You're still stuck on it having to be centred on an action. It's in the (frank)ing name, situational irony. The situation of him being in Columbus would be ironic.
The situation, can be an outcome of an action that was expected to have a contrasting one, or simply the expectation of a state of affairs that developed in contrast to said expectation. |

The irony lies in the fact that before the lottery happened, Columbus, having the worst record in the NHL that year, were expected to get the first pick/draft Yaks. Circumstances (Oilers winning the lottery) changed that, and him ending up in Columbus would be ironic. |

His being in Edmonton isn't "what was expected" in this case, it's his not being in Columbus that was. Thus his ending up in Columbus is what produces the irony. |
