I think the thing you are ignoring is the difference between being able to dump the puckwith reckless abandon because you are on the PK so you don't have to sorry about getting an icing and getting the puck out cleanly while playing 5 on 5 to avoid an icing and getting stuck out on the ice.

Anyone can fling the puck out of the zone. But it's another thing to be able to make a good outlet pass or even skate the puck out of the zone yourself.

- Roytastic

Yes, this.

And we're talking marginal differences between NHL hockey players. Schenn is capable of making an outlet pass, Grossmann can as well to a lesser extent -- but their rate of success and consistency is nowhere near a MDZ. MDZ can skate the sucker out of the zone, too... something those other two aren't known to do.

Same thing happened to me at a country show. Can't remember the act, but they had chops.

It's the other way around. They like Read defensively against top lines but they don't think he's very effective offensively when he's been given chances to be out against other team's top shutdown lines.
- bmeltzer

Have we ever seen Matt Read out against top-level checking for any length of time?

Berube is not saying he is going to ignore the shootout, but he wants the team's focus on fixing the issues that need to be fixed that are a problem in the actual game.
- MJL

So in other words, no.

I think Ghost will be the most exciting, but Sanheim projects as the best bet for your #1 all-around player. I really do see a bit of McDonagh in him.
- jmatchett383

I agree I think Sanheim is ultimately going to be the best of our current D prospects. Ghost is going to be so much fun to watch though.

another thing the only reason brayden schenn is failing if because of flyers management they gave up on him on the first line after 2 games that sure is a long time for him to get settled in a role

i dont know sanheim enough. and from what ive heard he is at least a few years out naturally.

i think ghost could be in the NHL next year and hold his own out of the box as a third pair guy with shielded even strength minutes who mans the PP.

Yeah, Ghost is probably the most "NHL-ready" but still has some wrinkles to iron out (unless we count Alt). Sanheim is most likely 2 years away minimum, and Morin will probably need some quick AHL time. Ghost could definitely come into the top-6 and get 2PP time later this year if things fall into place.

Deal. You give us Crosby at 50% retained for VLC, and we'll cut them all.

Morin, Ghost and Sanheim all still have a shot at the crown... for me, it's a tie between Ghost and Sanheim right now in terms of likelihood.

Baby steps.

You can see the vast improvement 5 on 5 from last year as well as the breakout.

Oh for sure Sanheim needs to add about 10-20 lbs of muscle before he can be considered ready but the kid has all the intangibles needed to be one hell of a D man.

Agree on Ghost too. He'll never be a defensive stalwart but his puck skills and skating are drool-worthy. Certainly the most talented D prospect from a skill standpoint the Flyers have ever had as far as I can remember

I actually think Sanheim is the furthest ahead in terms of the cerebral part of the game. He needs to physically mature, but if he can pack on the pounds, he could be on the Flyers next season.

If the Flyers fall out of contention, I would love to see them move some of the defenseman and open up some spots for next season. As it stands now, they have Coburn, Amac, Streit, Grossmann and Schenn all signed through next season. I believe MDZ is a rfa as well.

I look forward to practice battles between him and that "duster" Brayden Schenn.

Can anyone tell me what a "duster" is and why Sanheim would call him that?

TIA

At 6'3" he should have the frame to be able to add that muscle.

Ghost is just going to have to make himself into Kimmo Timonen physically. Get as strong as he can.

If I had to guess, in 4-5 years the d pairings will shake out to look something like this..

Sanheim/1b
Morin/Ghost
Alt/Hagg

And even with not knowing who's on that top pair with Sanheim, those are some damn dreamy looking pairings to me.

This is what I found:

Duster
This term refers to those unfortunate souls who usually only step on the ice with 14 seconds to go when your team was initially down 4-2 but gave up an empty netter to make it 5-2. The coach finally calls the "dusters" number and does so in a way that the duster feels like he is finally getting an opportunity to showcase the talent he doesn't really possess. Why the term duster? Cause this plug has been sitting on the bench the entire game.............Collecting dust. Always the worst player on team.

No, I'm sure this will never get brought up at all again if Sanheim makes a Flyers roster that includes Brayden Schenn.

I have a feeling Coburn is going to be an oiler before his contract expires.
