Did I say they weren't?? I love Rielly, think he's going to have an amazing career and get much better in his own end. Gardiner has shown flashes of great offensive potential but has always been brutal in his own end. You can't deny the fact that they are both defenceman who are not that great in their own end. - dionschenn
They are both so young. And Rielly is 20 years old and I have seen some good improvement in his own zone the last year. |

Tell me, beyond a 90 year old Robidas, who in your D corps can actually play defense? - jazzca1974
Phaneuf can (yes, yes he can, relax). Percy can (so far). Polak and Robidas can as well but are most useful when playing 16-18 minutes. Franson, Gardiner, and Rielly have their issues. I think Rielly is getting better though. |

Agreed. I think Rielly has improved and will keep improving in his own end. Gardiner, I'm really not so sure how he'll be in his own end, even when he's 30. But I'm talking about the present. I never said to trade them or anything like that. It's just hard having these Dmen who arent good in their own zone. |

They will get better. You have to go through some growing pains to get the end result. Which is a high reward. Defence can be taught.(to a certain degree) What they can do offensively can not be taught. |

#3 definitely leans towards the offensive side rather than the defensive side. |

He does get the toughest mins in the NHL too. Cant forget that either. Shouldn't have the C on him but he is a really good defensemen. |

Yes I am sure thats the goal for a player after signing a 5 year deal, getting paid to fetch coffee for Dave Nonis. Perfect way to round out his game. - jazzca1974
Okay, you convinced me that because Gardiner was scratched last night, he should be traded. Gardiner for Bennett. |

I hope so. Some players are just liabilities. Look at Mike Green, even when he was shattering records with that slap shot and putting up crazy numbers, he took heat for not being good in his own end. I really don't think it's a ridiculous opinion to think that Gardiner will be a Dman who has troubles in his own end throughout his career. I think Rielly will figure it out, but not Gardiner. |

Is he an able bodied dman? Sure. Yeah he gets the tough minutes, but that speaks of what's on the Leafs back end more than it does of his abilities. But he's a lot better than me, I'll give him that. |
