Okay i made the playoffs part up

its was in January, basically Leaf playoffs anyways

Steve Kasper was the bench master

1st Neely and Stevens

then Tocchet?

Cherry bombs blast Kasper Former Bruins coach makes feelings known on Tocchet benching

The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)
December 2, 1996 | Nancy L. Marrapese, Globe Staff | Copyright

Despite the Bruins' efforts to put the Rick Tocchet benching incident behind them, the reverberations continued Saturday night when former Bruins coach Don Cherry, now a TV broadcaster and host of "Coaches' Corner" on "Hockey Night in Canada," ripped into Boston coach Steve Kasper for sitting out Tocchet against the Flyers last Tuesday night.

Cherry, whose colorful commentary is often as vitriolic as it is outrageous, long has targeted Kasper, dating back to the latter's playing career. Last year, Cherry was all over Kasper about sitting Cam Neely on the bench, along with Kevin Stevens, during a game in Toronto. Cherry said then that if Kasper were going to bench someone, he shouldn't dress them.

Do you really believe that? That's the most "coach" answer of all time right after "we played hard."

ROFL, I put the pic up first, saying it was oates and neely, then a few minutes after wrote under in an edit that I now think it was Stevens and Neely, the pic was from my original thought that was Oates, I more just remember how mad Don was about Neely...

They drew straws.... it wasn't based on performance.

Gardiner wasn't the worst against the pens.

Him and Phaneuf werent that great....heck even Rielly looked lost at times.
Not going to sit Phaneuf, even though he wasnt that great, he wasnt horrible.

Gardiner looked apprehensive....like he was afraid to hit.

Im fine with sitting him.

gardiner has played like poop so far

my guess is he was thinking too much after getting the big payday.. or.. like a lot of young guys just needed to sit and watch a game from the press box..

its not a big deal at all

- Dozzer

Bingo.
Not sure why people freak out because the kid sits one game.
Heck, we have him for the next several years, let him sit a couple if the team is winning.

In this article, it confirms what you are saying.

http://www.torontosun.com...h-same-lineup-against-avs

Right after it referencing the "short straw", it quotes #51:

“I talked to Randy and we both agreed I wasn’t playing like I should be,” Gardiner said. “So I sat out. That’s how it goes."

- TheThrill

And there you go.
It was performance base.
No big deal.

Now, do you keep him out or put him back in? If put him back in...who do you sit?

It will sort itself out. The lineup will probably be fluid. Win and you're in! I'm curious at who starts in goal tonight.

He didn't look great, agreed.... and if he has to sit so be it. But i don't think he was the worst.

Robidas has been the worst Dman through 3 games, but he's not going to sit.

Gardiner has probably had his way for his entire hockey career prior to now. His perception may simply be, "This is how I want to play - let me." Randy's perception is, "This is how I need you to play - to help win games."
Clearly they aren't on the same page or have the same goals. Allowing Gardiner and Rielly to make decisions as to how they want to play is a poor coaching decision, and if RC doesn't have final say or cannot control that outcome then what is he doing here?

He has had his ups and downs....I would think, they will let him get his legs and game back.
However, if 10 games down the road....he's still off....I'd sit him for a game.

He's the new toy.....they wont sit him yet.

He just needs more games. Some shifts I see what he wants to do, but he can't quite get there. I hope playing time will sort that out.
