It would be a mistake to pass up an opportunity to improve the team based on LH versus RH.
- MJL

correct. then maybe you deal one of those guys to address that need.

I'd still rather wait and see than rush out and make a major commitment to Staal and hand him the number one job, when he's really better suited to be a second banana.
- Jsaquella

i do think staal will be overpaid due to the market, but the NYRs defensive ranks are pretty damn good with him as that 1B type with mcdonagh

fair point. i said i am not sure i go that route to sign him either. would you do 6 mill for 6 years?

then the age old how many legit #1 are there? those guys we will likely never get.

- rinaldo

Nope.

There's not a ton of them. You could probably name 20-25, but you'd be dealing with warts by the end of that list, when you get to guys like Phaneuf and Erhoff.

And then 3 years from the now, the cost for a comparable player to MacDonald is that much higher! As I said in a previous post. And you're still going to have to pay long term. And who knows with the scarcity of available defenseman, if one will even be available. You don't stop making the team better because you have no real shot to win the cup.
- MJL

how much better does he really make this team? get a vet short term like a hainsey. then reevaluate your needs

No, but if Hextall's trying to move him after three games, it could be seen as a panic move by a new GM desperate to shake his team up.
- Jsaquella

Havent looked around the league much but im sure there could be a gm or two in the same boat

If the Flyers had a McDonagh, I'd be all for adding a Staal. But I'm not going to sign Staal and hope he can be McDonagh

you can name 25 though like you said gets dicey at the end.

erhoff is very underrated imo though.

Significantly better, especially with the loss of Timonen. No need to reevaluate the needs. They already know what they are.

They wouldn't be signing him to hope he can be a McDonaugh. They'd be signing him to be well, Marc Staal.

Agreed, but I'm sure I'd get beefs if I had a list and he was in the top 20.

I get that, but I'd rather have good leftys than bad rightys
- Jsaquella

The handuful of top-90 picks and the $50M in contract commitments they threw at the problem should have been able to net a good righty (or two), no?

disagree he doesnt make them significantly better. way overvaluing his worth.

well in 3 or 4 years there will be a need to reevaluate. disagree again as i think the have no idea what they are.

I can agree with your first statement, but being an evolutionist, I'll take umbrage with the second.

Its all that stupid asteroids fault. If it didn't hit the dinosaurs would still be in charge, humanity would nervously be hiding in caves and Raptor Jesus would give his blessing to the National T-Rex Hockey League.

Ahh, what a sight to behold it would of been

Franking asteroid!

Tell me why he doesn't? A solid case still hasn't been made for why his deal is a bad deal.

true. i do still think if you could get him on a reasonable deal, its still a good add. its part of the solution. youre likely going to have to form a core by committee with any current amalgamation of this flyers roster.

although the reasonableness of the deal will be a difficult sticking point.

It did, although Colorado was playing well at the time.

I'd still rather wait and see what comes around. With the injuries in Carolina, would they have interest in Schenn? Maybe, but even if they do, what do they have that can help? Tlusty is a UFA next summer and probably looking for a raise.

They wouldn't include Faulk, and I doubt we'd be able to pry a Lindholm or even Ryan Murphy in the deal.

In the NHL, 12 games is a massively strong message.
- MJL

Yes and no. If they really want players to stop doing crap like this, suspensions of 20 games for a 1st offense, 40 for a 2nd, 80 for a 3rd and a lifetime ban for a 4th would likely do the trick.

Reasonable deal, sure. I just can't see that happening. Weak FA class, he's the cream of it and he plays a position of great need.

how does a #4 dman on a borderline playoff team make them significantly better. he is a solid dman. thats it. no game changer. no we need him type of player. the definition of a complimentary piece. how many contending teams does he even play in the top 4? i dont know as just asking without really looking. not the pens, rangers, blue jackets, nj just in their own division.

a team like where the flyers are currently i do not give out 6 year deals to guys like him. that is why it is a bad deal.

tell me why it is a good deal again? because you need vets like him and the market will only rise? you think he is this very good dman obviously.i do not.

Sure, but that's not reality. And surely ramming a players head into the ice is different then a hit from behind or a board.

Dude, you'd have better luck convincing my 12-yo niece that Justin Bieber isn't dreamy.
