I wouldn't trade the kinds of assets they are demanding for him. It's not just his play, but that contract is a monster.
- Jsaquella

He has 4 more years at 5.5. We pay AMac 5 .
I would take the Myers deal considering age / potential

I just want rid of Grossman. I was watching the game with 2 people last night who never watch the Flyers. They both pointed out how slow Grossman is and how easily he gets beaten.
I know a lot of people here like him, but he is a 6th Dman and that is it.
Schultz a 7 and MDZ an 8th

Just a guess, but I don't think they expected this -- because they re-signed Timonen.

I don't know that anybody felt this was a Cup contender, and I feel Hextall admitted as much when he said they weren't in the top tier.

But Hextall and company sure weren't thinking that Timonen wouldn't be able to go and that Coburn would be out already.

I don't know what to make of them, since I haven't watched tonight's game yet. But I said it yesterday: With Coburn out, it's going to be hard for them to not give up tons of shots and chances. They just aren't built to lock teams down.

More likely than not, particularly with Coburn out, they're going to give up goals. I wish that wasn't the case, but I know better. The only question is can they get points in these games until Coburn returns?

I don't know the answer to that.

- AllInForFlyers

I'm going to say they resigned the ghost of Timonen exactly because they thought their defense was this bad. Timonen was already a shell of his former self last year and was still the best defenseman on the team by far despite his physical limitations.

You don't keep talking 39 year old defensemen out of retirement because you've planned for his not being on the team. Resigning the ghost of Timonen was a direct result of lack of longterm planning on Holmgren's part.

While it sucks for the fans, letting this team sink or swim with it's current roster is the best thing to do this year and if it looks like they won't make the playoffs, follow the Penguins lead in how to draft a superstar. They have no stigma due to their actions and it has directly led to several Stanley cups.

Tank like it's 1983 for Pit? or 2003-2006 for Pit? Not everyone can get away with it like the Penguins and come out smelling like a rose.

- Flyers_01

I dot think they'll tank intentionally, but the next 20 games are hard. They might be out of the race if they don't fix their play soon

I'm one of those who feels they paid too much for MacDonald, but at least you know what you're getting with him. Myers is still up and down. The Flyers have enough of those.

Grossmann has struggled. He's had a few instances where he gets caught in no man's land, where he seems unsure if he should pinch or drop back, and he's been burned on them. He's had instances where he flat out got beat.

Del Zotto is a capable offense guy, but he's a mess in his own end. Schultz has been one of their most solid guys (maybe a case of being tallest midget, but he's been OK)

I think that Holmgren assumed he could land another good defenseman in a trade. Hextall seems a lot more realistic in that regard.

Look at solid defensemen who have moved of late. MacDonald got the Isles a 2nd and a 3rd. Boychuk cost NY two 2nds and a 3rd. Leddy cost a very good prospect in Pokka. It's expensive business to trade for a defense.

Toss in the significant deals to secondary guys and they're cap strapped as well as shallow.

I want a goal scorer. We already have a Giroux assist guy
- Winning

Giroux is in his prime now. In 4 years when the Flyers might have the defensive prospects playing major roles. Giroux will be declining (still a very good player) and Eichel would still be ascending.

Agreed, it could get really ugly with the upcoming schedule. I was hoping for wins against NJ and MTL to gain confidence/momentum. Now I fear the worst. 'Intentionally' throwing the season would occur around December and it would be unloading vets for future considerations. Of course they call it looking to the future and not throwing in the towel.

They can play team D when they want to, I mean look at their penalty kill last night.
It's 5 on 5 they get demolished.

Any interest in Eric Brewer? He has been a healthy scratch for Tampa and is rumored to be on the trade block. I personally would rather see them stick it out with what they have, maybe spot Alt or Manning a few games knowing they likely won't be much better then would they are playing now.

I'm not a huge fan of Berube, but I can't toss a ton of blame at him right now. They're a mess.

My biggest issue so far is I think he should have given Brayden Schenn more time with G & Voracek. That said, Schenn has been terrible, so even that is a conditional criticism.

Yes Myers is up and down but he has shown potential on a bad team. A change of scenery could help. I know they would never trade for him but this team cannot go on with this Dcore. If Schultz has been one of our better guys in the last 2 games then that doesn't say much about the others. I am done with Grossman . Simply way too slow
The 3rd period was a disgrace it seemed they like they were instructed to sit back.

I dont mind. i want them to win, but lets face it without Kimmo and coburn this team isnt a playoff team..might as well get a high pick in a strong draft.

I shouldn't laugh but

I think folks are a bit harsh on Homer (yes the AMAC contract and other are questionable). The decline occurred with the Pronger injury. We are still paying for it now with a lack of prospects from the trade. This organisation has a Voodoo curse.

If I could deal a longer contract for Brewer, yes. He's in the last year of his deal, if they'd take Umberger or Grossmann for him, I'd do it.

Yeah, 4 periods isn't enough.

I get the shuffle, situationally, during the Devils game, but the post-game smack talking about the player was unnecessary.

The problem is, showing potential while having that contract is a turn off for me. If Buffalo comes down off the price, I'd be more willing to consider it. But they're demanding top prospects for him. Detroit loves Mantha. He's a beast.

They should have won! No reason why they shouldn't have if you saw the first 40 minutes! They executed a game plan perfectly until they stopped giving it their all!

i think you're right. some of the pieces here are not that good or not developing as they had hoped. probably not going to be bad enough to get a top 5 pick but it seems the plan is wait out the cap issues, clear come of the dead wood and in a couple years you have: an older-but-still-pretty-good G, Simmonds, the new beast, in his prime, jake, couts, raffl, laughton, ghost, morin, sanheim, haag and whoever else they add as the core......then add thru FA and the draft. i hope hextall can get it done and the fans can give him the time to clean up the mess he was left with

Going into camp, I thought that the Flyers would finish with 92-95 points and anywhere from 3rd to 6th in the division. If Coburn is out for more than a few games, I'd lower that to 84-88 points and 6th or 7th in the division.

And he doesn't take advantage positionally when he has the chance (taking Jagr into the boards, instead of letting him speed by for a goal, for example).
