So which teams have actually depth? Take the three best defensemen out of any NHL team over a three year period and let me know what you end up with.

Or just take out their top two guys from last season.

2 games, and I've already seen enough. Dude gets caught up ice about once every 2 shifts and leads to an odd-man rush. Happened to Streit, once, and he usually is able to get puck control when he pinches. MDZ came drifting back into the picture after a goal on at least 2 goals against last night.

The lack of a top pairing defensemen is a lack of depth from many perspectives. And Timonen and Coburn were not that last year. Both were middle pairing guys at best. It's not the same as removing a player like Weber or Doughty.

Even so, the Flyers defense still doesn't have a good mix, even with Timonen and Coburn in the lineup. To me, that is part and parcel of depth.

Well, if they'd given more heed to drafting defensemen in earlier drafts, the idea is that we would have more options than Brandon Manning and Oliver Lauridsen, or Nick Schultz. Heck, Pittsburgh was running out their #10 defenseman last season (Samuelsson and Dumolin) and they would be locks for spots on the Flyers right now.

I dont think anyone is saying we dropped the ball by not getting three d-men that are a 1,2&3 on defense. We are just saying that with what we have now.. its trouble. Yea, it is absolute misfortune, but doesnt change what we have

Good news is that Pronger will lead the Flyers to Stanley Cup victory after he hands out suspensions to all the opposing star players during the playoffs because he can do anything now.

They traded a fair number of 2nd and 3rd round picks at the trading deadline and such in the semi recent past

Think they have corrected this but are behind the curve right now

Pronger: "Suspend Crosby now."
Quintal: "Why? For what?"
Pronger: "I said...suspend...Crosby...NOW!"
Quintal: "Yes sir. Schedule the press conference."

The Flyers have 3 legitimate top 4 NHL defenseman, and 6 bona fide NHL defensman. Players like Grossmann and Schenn to this point are the very definition of depth defenseman. The problem is that they lack a legitimate top pairing, and the injury to Coburn accentuates that issue.

Maybe your definition of depth is having 3 or 4 top pair defenseman.

- MJL

how many top 2 legitimate NHL defenceman do they have in your estimation???

And not to beat a dead horse, but if they had traded JvR for a more dynamic/less one dimensional "future top pairing d-man" they would be in a much better spot as well..

Hell, say they had traded JvR for John Carlson...

The stats don't agree with you. Kimmo-Coburn had by far the best possession numbers of any pairing on the team, similar to other top pairing around the league. They also logged the most minutes on one of the league's best PK units.

Schenn -6
Del Zotto -5
Giroux -5
Raffl -4
Voracek -4

I'd say we're off to a fabulous start again!

he'd be fine if he had Chris Pronger on the other side.....he needs a bonafide # 1 or a very good defensive partner to play with or he'll get you killed.

... but they don't have that, and they never did have that.

Again, having a bunch of **** and throwing it against the wall does not equate to having "depth" in a meaningful sense. It's just having warm bodies.

- gollum

I think Timonen and Coburn makes a decent top pair. Not ideal, but decent.

I hold the Flyers defense in higher regard then you do obviously. They aren't just a bunch of warm bodies.
