But how much of the results are down to the lack of talent in the roster?

Once the lockout ended and BSchenn and Coots took their PPG butts up to the NHL, their only real talent up front was Akeson. The defense and goalies weren't too flash, either.

We'll just wait and see what happens this year because he has the talent this year. The Phantoms should be a playoff team and shouldn't be at the bottom in scoring again.

I disagree. 3 years at $4m AAV is a great deal for the BJs.
- Feanor

Its good to see he finally saw the light. Now if he continues to produce as he did for one season so far, then he can come back and say he is worth what he was asking for.

The AAV is good, but the sticking point was supposedly the cap-hit in the last year of the bridge. Looks like the Jackets conceded that to get something done... they must have lost all their leverage w/ the injuries.

Heresy!!

All those wasted years
(All those precious wasted years)
Who will pay?

Do we have to be forgiving at last?
What else can we do?
Do we have to say goodbye to the past?
Yes, I guess we do.

*Sure, only a couple of people here will get this. Oh, well.

Its that $6 mil in year 3 sets the stage for Johansen's next contract. This contracts AAV is fantastic.
- moylander

It's very similar to Giroux's bridge deal.

11-12 $2,750,000
12-13 $3,500,000
13-14 $5,000,000

That was the definition of a media circus. It was very close to being a real circus too. Had it gone a few more weeks, I think TO would have hired some trapeze artists and maybe bought an elephant or two.

He's already clearly better than Giroux and doesn't grab ass... I think he got an extra mil in the 3rd year just for that!

Wow, they caved. $6M in that second year... his next contract is going to be huge.
- Tomahawk

If he continues to be a thirty goal scorer, he would've gotten at least $6m/yr on his next contract anyway imo. Given how messy this was, I think the BJs made out ok.

Murray can be a good teaching coach, but he also can be short with guys who don't buy in.

Hard to judge based on the level of talent he's had with the Phantoms.

If he puts up 30+ goals each of the next three seasons, he could get something like Bobby Ryan's deal. Ryan's played 6 full seasons (plus 23 games in 2007-08). He's got four 30+ goal seasons plus a 20 goal season and 11 in 46 games of the lockout year. If Johansen has four good seasons during his bridge deal, he could easily eclipse a $7 mill AAV

If the cap goes up, that number could increase.

If RJo keeps scoring at this clip, he'll definitely point to Ryab's contract as a comparable next time around. Looking at the players in the thirty goal scoring range last season, most seem to be pretty close to $6m AAV (with exceptions in each direction, namely Crosby and Kunitz)

That too. Over $6 million is likely barring a regression. $7 million+ a real possibility. If he scores 40+ with around 85 points in the last year of the bridge, what then?

If he scores like he did this past season over the life of this deal, he's making Giroux money, or higher, in his next deal

Poor Bryz. I thought he'd stick around given all the stuff the Wild were doing with him (like #BryzSelfie on Twitter). I guess with Kuemper and Backstrom, he could only play in the AHL.
