Can't wait for the Flyers to start? I dread watching the Flyers. They are a small, no hitting, no fighting, slow team. They have the smallest forwards in the league. Can't win a battle in the corners. Their number one player has very suspect character and at the very least, lacks the maturity to successfully lead an NHL team. Can you imagine Gordie Howe, or Bobby Orr, or Wayne Gretzky or messier or Yzerman grabbing a male cop's butt? Does anyone here really think that he is a player to build the team around? Does anyone really think he has the character to be captain? It's going to be a great year. Can't wait. With all their faults, I rather watch the Eagles any day. Chip Kelly is head and shoulders ahead of Berube too. - Bergey

Then watch the Eagles. They almost blew a 27-7 lead.
I'd say taking a team that was 1-7 to the playoffs and being a Hart finalist after not scoring a goal thru the first 15 games says all that needs to be said about Giroux and his ability to lead a team.
If you're going to troll, at least be funny or thought provoking. |

I think I'm laying off the booze for the rest of this month. Might holler at some drinks for a party on Halloween. |

I usually have a monthly poop show, either because of something fun like halloween, or something not fun like a pnt exam
Everything else is just hitting up a few beers with good buddies. Can't get better than that |

You can name call all you want but here's the bottom line - last year the Kings had the biggest team in the league and won the cup and the Flyers had the 24th biggest team and they were eliminated in the first round. The Kings kept 2 fighters on their team who actually got some playing time and won the cup. If the trend in the league is going away from size and fighting, how do you explain this? I guess everyone on this board knows more about hockey than Dean Lombardi, the GM of the Kings. If the Flyers acquired some of the Kings bigger forwards like Dwight King, or Nolan, or Clifford, this board would be in an uproar. But, size, toughness, and grit are absolutely essential to win in the playoffs. The Flyers are far too small up front and this results in them losing battles in the corners far too often.
I am not pessimistic, I am a realist. As I understand Hextall's plan, he wants to preserve his nucleus of forwards -Giroux, Simmonds, Vorachek, Courtier, Schenn while the young defensemen develop in the minors (ghostebierre and hagg) and in junior (Morin and Sanheim). That makes sense to me as does keeping draft picks and developing young players. That is the long term plan. The short term plan is to remain competitive and try to make the playoffs. What I disagree with is not having an enforcer or at least a true heavyweight to protect the skill players who form the nucleus you are trying to maintain and keep together. Relying on Simmonds and Rinaldo to protect them is ludicrous and is going to get them injured. What I also disagree with is going real small at forward. I have been a Flyer's fan since the 1970s and I cannot remember a team that was real small at forward ever winning the cup. When the playoffs come around, the bigger teams force everything to the boards and grind the smaller teams down. There is not that much open ice. That is one reason the Kings were so successful.
As far as Giroux is concerned, someone said that the incident involving the cop was an isolated incident. You don't know that. It was just the first incident that was in the public domain. And, even if it was a single incident, it's bad enough. It reflects poorly on his character and calls into question his ability to lead. Let me add, his performance in the playoffs against the Rangers was miserable. |

How did those enforcers we had in the 90's protect Eric Lindros?

How well did Shawn Thornton protect Marc Savard? Enforcers fighting other enforcers does nothing to protect star players from guys like Matt Cooke, Chris Neil or Patrick Kaleta.
Back in the 1970's and 80's enforcers certainly played a role, because back then a guy like Neil would have to answer the call and fight when he took a run at an opposing team's star player. Now, it's dumb for Neil to fight Rosehill or Orr. So he will refuse to fight, or simply turtle and get his team a power play.
This isn't the 1970s, where if a guy looked cross-eyed at Bobby Clarke, he have four guys bating the poop out of him. |

Let's be honest, thevNHL hasn't outlawed fighting because it helps draw publicity, otherwise it's really a sideshow that has little bearing on a game's outcome. Now physicality and grit? Sure they play a part but it's hextall's first year as gm I doubt this team will look anything similar in 4-5 years. With that said jay Rosehill does jack poop for the team. |

You need team toughness. Absolutely. But a guy like Rosehill does very little to help a team win. You need physicality and grit that can play the game. |

I couldn't care less about his off ice life, so long as it's not a distraction on the ice.
A large chunk of those 1980's Oilers teams did more blow than Motley Crue. |

I didn't think much of it myself especially since it was offseason. |
