ehhh there were a few of the key guys missing such as stewart gionta ennis and the whole defense were backups besides mezaros so i wouldnt consider it anything close to final product

edit: gorges was out there too

He turned into a 20 goal scoring winger for a couple years, then faded into minu-infinity territory.

He actually refused to go to his exit interview two seasons ago when he last played because he hated Kirk Muller that much. Didn't play at all last season. Got an AHL contract with the Checkers this season and a PTO with the Canes.

- BINGO!

He never scored 20 in the NHL.

Difference between lottery team(this year) and absolute tire fire(last years team).

They'll put up 73-78 pts this year, puts them in the bottom 5 and in the mcdavid conversation but at the same time they'll put up a decent effort and not completely embarrass themselves.

After the Washington game - we might actually be kinda good this year.

Today - we are going to be terrible this year.

We will be both at times, and smart money is on more terrible than good. It'll go a lot better if you lower expectations and take the small victories (maybe Grigorenko plays most of the season here and pots 15 goals, maybe Myers looks consistent) for what they are.

Good morning hockey enthusiasts. Preseason is over and I have to say that I am really impressed with some of our young players. Grigorenko, McCabe, and Ristolainen have all made very strong cases that they are NHL ready and should make this team. I expected Grigo and Risto to show well, but I was surprised by just how good McCabe has been.

Tim Murray and Ted Nolan have promoted the idea that there will be, or rather has been, a competition for roster spots this year. They have both stated so publicly, Tim Murray multiple times. So now that the preseason is over, the winners of this competition must be declared and the roster should be set soon.

So who has won the competitions for a roster spot on the Sabres? Is there any way they could deny McCabe or Ristolainen a roster spot? Could Tim Murray send Grigo down to Rochester while giving Reinhart a 9 game tryout without loosing face? The answer to both of these questions in my opinion is a definite no. If you say there is a competition for jobs, you have to honor that and give the jobs to those who have outperformed their competition. McCabe, Ristolainen and Grigorenko have earned their jobs, and I am happy for them, and for us.

I would bet everything I had that Reinhart will not be given a 9 game tryout. He hasn't earned it. IMO he is only still here and not already sent down because they want him to see the process and get the experience, to see what it takes in the NHL so that he knows what to expect and what he needs to improve on to succeed at this level. What purpose would a further 9 or less game tryout do for the kid? Ruin his confidence, possibly get him injured, take a spot from another player who has earned it over him?

So far McCabe looks as good or better than Ristolainen. Nothing against Risto, he has looked great too, it is more to compliment McCabe, and to point out that he has earned a job.
I wonder where this leaves us with our defense. I would think that Pysyk will make the team. But now I am not so sure what will happen. Will they waive Weber to make room for Pysyk upon his return? Will they send Pysyk to Rochester?

My thoughts are that Pysyk right now is further along in his development than Ristolainen or McCabe. Not that his ceiling is higher than either of those two, but that he is closer to his ceiling and higher on that wall than they are. However he does not have the established credentials of an NHL veteran that would automatically earn him a spot over a rookie/younger player, and his injury so early in camp has prevented him from competing for a job. He has paid his dues more than the other young players, which makes it a really hard call. I think, what would be fair, would be to put Weber on waivers and have Benoit as the seventh dman. But I doubt that's how it will go down.

What I am sure about is that I don't want any of the kids(Ristolainen, McCabe, Pysyk, Grigorenko) to ever be a healthy scratch. I would rather them play in Rochester.

Wonder what they can get for him..... A bag of pucks is way too much. Maybe a stick of gum?
