You seem to want to chalk it up to bad luck. We're saying the puck never hits Coburn and goes right to Fehr if he isn't scrambling across the crease to cover the guy(s) Amac left open on the other side.

The right play would have been to release Fehr to Coburn, and take the guy that Read released to him. If he had done that, it's probably a routine glove save by Mason.

- Tomahawk

In other words, even though MacDonald had tight coverage on Fehr, whow was directly in the slot, and a very dangerous player in that position. MacDonald was still responsible for covering anyone else who was open. Even though Couturier had coverage on nobody on the play. Coburn was coming from behind the net, and there is no way he would've gotten there in time. It seems as though with every response, a different point of blame is being applied to MacDonald on the play. Scapegoating at it's finest. The bottom line is that sometimes goals are scored in the NHL even with good coverage. Abd bounces of the puck off a block shot sometimes don't go your way. Nature of the beast.

The biggest key to the Flyers D having success will be the willingness of the forwards to consistently backcheck and keep the gaps as short as possible. If they do, the D will be fine, certainly not great, but good enough to get this club into the playoffs.

You act like a 6-7 year NHL vet is more than he is... Hes an overpaid pilon and a 3rd pairing dman. Trade schenn for a 2nd or something, free up cap, and get a faster player in the lineup that will play system d whether that's ghost, alt, lauridsen at $1 million or less its worth it. I'm tired of watching the same old band of misfits attempting to play defense the last few seasons. They are not good.

From the article I posted re: schenn last season....

The advanced metrics paint an odd and somewhat troubling picture for the Flyers. The most concerning player is Schenn, by far.

He will always (fairly or not) be compared to the player he was traded for (James van Riemsdyk), and he's making a decent amount of money at $3.6 million through 2016. Both of those things cast Schenn in a negative light, but even looking at things objectively reveals some major problems.

Despite having such limited ice time, he still had a stinker of a year. He played against the worst competition of any regular player (defense or forward) with a competition rating of minus-0.732.

He was also extremely sheltered, starting 54.6 percent of his faceoffs in the offensive zone, with Timonen being the only defenseman to start in the offensive zone more often. This makes his lack of scoring even more inexcusable.

And finally, with all of those factors against him, Schenn still had a brutal relative Corsi rating of minus-8.2, meaning that the other team had more possession than the Flyers did while Schenn was on the ice—and by a sizable margin.

This is extremely concerning. Come up with any number of excuses you want, but there's not much to be encouraged about.

None of what you posted here points to Lauridsen, Alt, or any other player in the minors being able to replace Grossmann or Schenn at this point.

As my final words on this, none of them are capable at this point, in my opinion. That's why it hasn't been done.

His point is that the team isn't infallible. They do make mistakes, so you can't just assume that what they do is always the correct thing to do.

Basically, just because the Flyers do something doesn't mean it's the correct thing to do, so you can't say "well, the Flyers do this, so you're wrong"

- PhillySportsGuy

You completely missed the point I've made. So you think the Flyers are wrong about Lauridsen, and they are missing the opportunity to bring a comparable player up and save some cap space?

You keep trying to explain something as if I don't know what point he is trying to make.

If you call both dmen right on top of each other good 6V5 coverage, and not a breakdown, than there's really nothing left to discuss here.

And Coots was busy marking the second most dangerous Cap on the ice... the guy who just had the puck.

So Rosehill got sent down to the A..
- Hextall271

Thank god. That means the forwards are Giroux, Voracek, Schenn, Simmonds, Lecavalier, Couturier, Read, Raffl, Akeson, Umberger, Bellemare, Jones, Rinaldo. Defensemen are Coburn, MacDonald, Schenn, Grossmann, Streit, Del Zotto, Schultz with Mason and Emery in net. Am I missing someone? That's only 22 but Berube said he wanted 23.

Probably 22 until they make all their paper moves. With Pronger and White on LTIR, they're $55k within maxing out option 2.

The best thing about Morin is that he's rougly 26 feet tall, with a 3-foot vertical leap.

22 is fine with me. That 23rd player will actually get to play if he stays in the AHL.

Another spin. They both weren't on top of each other. With every post a different blame is made. it's 6 on 5, and a team is outnumbered. The coverage is to collapse around the net, and keep the play to the outside. The Flyers defenseman were outnumbered 3 on 2 around the net. If a forward doesn't collapse down low, someone is going to be open. The very fact that MacDonald was on the goal scorer, shows that he was in the right place. Unfortunately, in bang bang play, a bad bounce landed right on Fehr's stick.
What Couturier did after Backstrom made the backhand pass back to the point was glide on his skates instead of getting back down low. And what I find ironic is that you state that Couturier had good coverage because he was on a dangerous man with the puck. But MacDonald blew his coverage when he was covering a player in the dead slot, who also wound up with the puck. Classic scapegoating.

Congrats....

See how easy it is to post your opinion without using words like 'clearly, obviously, most flyers fans would agree, and/or its common sense' in an effort to make yourself sound omnipotent.

You may be right in your opinion.... My opinion is we don't lose much replacing Schenn or Grossmann with a minor leaguer that may or may not be ready. Its worth the gamble IMO especially considering a pick and salary relief as compensation.

- moylander

It would be a disaster in terms of the defense being significantly weaker. Not to mention putting young players in a situation that they aren't ready for, and could do damage to their development.

So Hexy, the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers, says this on Thursday after the game:
"I think nowadays, you’ve got to be able to play," Hextall said. "You’ve got to be able to play minutes. We’re seeing that’s going out of the game more. You’d love to have big guys that can play and do the rough stuff when it needs to be done, but that role is diminishing."

Rosehill gets waived the next morning.

There was enough blame (and that may be too strong a word) to go around.

I'm not scapegoating AMac here, nor was I last night.

It just occurred that the player Mac engaged with, and covered appropriately, was momentarily left unattended after the shot was taken. Instead of keeping his man and his stick in check, which he was doing quite well until the shot, Mac completely spun around, turning his back to Fehr to see where the puck was instead of keeping his man locked up. He could have merely turned his head to find it, hence the phrase "head on a swivel".

If he would have just continued to keep Fehr in check, the puck would've came to him instead of between his legs with his back to Fehr and chances are better the goal isn't scored. Fehr instead scores the goal as AMac tries to recover by desperately swinging his stick to where it was moments before.

That said, the rebound could have just as easily squirted to Mason's left and jammed home by either Cap standing by the crease and we could be "scapegoating" Read.

Whatever. Just a little too much confusion down low for my liking.

How the hell did we get to the point where we are debating whether or not OLIVER LAURIDSON! OLIVER........FREAKING........LAURIDSON, should be replacing Schenn or Grossmann in the lineup.

I had to do a double take on my browser to make sure I hadn't somehow ended up on Facebook or Philly.com and they changed their layout.

As we all know, the Flyers have to make moves for the Cap coming out of camp. Just because Rosehill was waived, doesn't mean he's not going to be on the team. In the past a player like Hall was waived, only to be in the lineup opening game.
