I've got to know, who's head is that on Troyer's body?
- YzermanIsTheMan

I'm pretty sure that's the oilers owner.

Ah. Can't blame me for not knowing, I barely can recognize Mike Illitch when I see him these days.

Ok. Just hockey. How do you consider it overpayment to give a 4x30 goal scorer 7 million? The term might be my only issue but the money is spot on in today's market, especially if he stays healthy.
- YzermanIsTheMan

I think when you consider salary comparables, look at all of his production, not just goals, and consider that's the 17th highest cap hit, for someone that comes nowhere remotely close to a top 20 player (top 40 or so forward. top 70 player?), all things considered, he'd be worth more like $5M. Tack in his lack of desire to win, and lack of intangible positives.... Granted, with the way salaries are going, I'd say $6M to $6.5M would be fair.

Ok. I see what you're getting at. Lets take your assessment that $6.5 is fair for his skill set at the max. Would you consider the .75 million more per year AAV is a good amount for keeping him in a market/team like Ottawa? I think those two factors (skillset+assurance money) is right for the situation.

They may have had to slightly overpay to keep him there. I figured he would get around 7, so not surprised at all.

He was making 5M last year and will be again this year! Wait until 2-3 years from now to see how he's doing vs salary! and he won't make over 6.5M for a few years still anyways (back loaded contract) so you acknowledge that he should already be making 6.5M based on his current/past production and not his future production? Not far off then!

Well, I put $6.5M on the high end. So, an extra mil to get him to play in Ottawa. Sure, they had to do it, I get that. I understand they were over a barrel. Doesn't make it better.

I would. I think that there has to be an expected overpayment from a number of markets that factor into the equation.
