@jonasTSN1050: Carlyle says Kessel left the ice feeling stiff. Couldn't specify what the issue was.

At the heart of the stats

Corsi = shots on goal + missed shots + blocked shots
Fenwick = shots on goal + missed shots

Then we calculate for and against. We might also look a relative Corsi/Fenwick compared to our teammates to adjust for team/coaching bias. We might also look at situational Corsi/Fenwick numbers to dissect further.

At the end of the day, it is based on Shots on Goal, which has been around a lot longer than +/-. Add in blocked shots (Corsi), which is about as old as +/- and then missed shots (not sure how old that stat is).

You are INFERRING possession from these numbers, not calculating actual possession, or how often possession is given away, or how often possession is taken away or fundamental mistakes made etc. etc. etc.

So, yeah, your new phone might be a touchtone phone the same size and shape as the old rotaries, but let's not pretend you're comparing your new iPhone to your grandma's rotary here.

We have a long way to go and I don't see where we have come very far at all.

the way teams and the stats nerds are using and applying the stats has come a long way.

I have to disagree again

Anyone else actually think Kessel is pretty cool?

I mean he suffered the last man selected humilation. Gets ridiculed by fans of every other team for looking like a slightly smaller version of John Daly. Gets laughed at for the bicycle riding GIF in the training room. Deals with the absurd Toronto fans and media. Labelled as a one-way player (probably justified) called soft, when he misses very few games

... and yet he doesn't seem to really give a sh1t about any of it. He just goes out and does his thing on the ice. I gotta admire a guy like that.

I played ball hockey with him once during the lockout year.

He's a very nice guy.

And you wouldn't guess.... he's pretty good at ball hockey.

Do you deny that at the heart of the advanced stats, is still Shots directed at the goal?

Do you deny that "possession" is being inferred/assumed from these totals?

Seriously, I want to see sensors gathering information so I can see some really useful stuff indicating how well someone checks or how often someone throws the puck away in each zone...

I would love to see some advanced stats, just ones that are actually advanced.

Not again, please! They're useful to those who find usefulness in them. To those that don't care, they simply won't just start to care. End the debate.
