Based on this board, Coburn is on the hot seat.

Pronger 2.0 or the next Luke Schenn.

The story is waiting to be written.

Maybe he is in the hot seat because of the suspect D.
- MJL

Then you at least acknowledge that. All they did was cite his numbers and say he was good, not great. To me he has been great... but he can only do so much.

I'd love to see them find another guy on that top tier, a Giroux level.

Hopefully Couturier can become that but they do need a couple more of those war horses and players to look to after Giroux. A real 1a 1b combo.

Thankfully they may have found such players with the draft for the back end. A "Mackinnon" of sorts would be an amazing find. Help extend the window once Giroux ages or injuries take a toll.

I completely agree with you! In the playoffs, if you shut down the G line and shut down the powerplay, you have a great shot at beating the Flyers. Before Briere was a legit threat on the 2nd line. I'd love a Mackinnon. But I'd be happy with a Briere too.

I'm not sure Couts will ever force an opposing coach to strategize how to stop him.

Spent all day fighting for a guy, suctioning lungs, etc etc.

Only to have him pass at the end of it. Blah.

Sorry to hear man! you fought for him. If everyone had someone to fight for them the world would be a better place.

What Couturier and I guess Brayden Schenn do in the next couple years will determine the course for this team down the line. I truly believe that.

If they surge like Richards and Carter did, we can have a real bounce back. If not, some more holes will need to be filled.

Actually, I'd be happy with somewhere in between. Pronger or Chara-like defense, with some mobility and good hockey sense. And a little nastiness. Everything else is gravy.

Yes, I do. They're all assets. Players are assets. A draft pick is an asset. FA dollars are assets. Contracts are assets, and you have 50 of them. I don't trade a high value asset (draft pick) for a low value asset (4th line agitator).

- TheGreat28

A player drafted who fails to develop, is not an asset. It's a wasted asset.

You are defining success by a specific pick making it to the NHL. I'm defining success by having a couple of picks over the course of a draft, or even a couple of drafts, performing a significant role in the NHL.

- TheGreat28

I am? You brought Drozdetsky into the conversation, not me. I just responded to it with a valid point. Now you're trying to move the conversation to a different point, and trying to discuss multiple picks and players.

Sometime over the last year, we had a similar discussion. I criticized the Flyers for not having a draft pick after round 1 make a significant contribution at the NHL level. I did a half objective, half subjective analysis of every team's drafts going back 10 years or so. Teams scored a point for each player that was a 1st/2nd line kind of player, 1-3 dman or starting goalie. The Flyer were at the bottom of the rankings.

We then had the argument about the Rinaldo's that have had their cup of coffee, or even more. At the time we discussed Lauridsen. My view is the same now as it was then.

I really do believe the last couple of drafts will change their rankings. And that includes Holmgren's last couple of drafts, assuming Hextall develops these guys better than they have done in the past.

- TheGreat28

I think the Flyers have a solid prospect base. Things change in a hurry in Hockey. It wasn't long ago when the talk was about the lack of d prospects in the organization. Now they're gushing in them.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same article, but the one I read made the following statements about Mason.

"-- Perhaps the biggest reason the Flyers made the playoffs last season was the play of Mason"

"He brought the kind of stability in the crease the Flyers hadn't had in years"

Simmonds is top Winger, and Read is no slouch offensively. If Couturier grows offensively this year, that's a very good 2nd line.

Not to mention if Lecavalier bounces back and has a good year. Flyers have plenty of offense. That isn't going to be what makes or breaks this team this year.

My ideal lineup has Couts/Read/Simmonds a 2a/2b line. Really a 3rd line that provides that checking line element with strong scoring. Add a sniper on the 1st line. Then have a 2nd line that would be equivalent of the Briere line a few years ago, or maybe a little better. I want a more dynamic center than Schenn/Vinnie (of today), maybe Schenn as a 2nd line winger.

I like Raffl and guys like that. But more as 4th liners.

Basically I want a lineup 3 lines deep that can score, and a 4th line that you can ice for more than 6 minutes a game.

Piece of cake, right?

Maybe I'm too old, but I like some traditional. Make 2 scoring lines and a 3rd shutdown line each playing minutes in a tier like system. Line 1 getting the most, and so on down.

I think Line 1 is set for the future. Couturier now has a chance to show he can be part of the next tier down on the second. If not you have a monster 3rd line center and PK player.

While I enjoy seeing guys like Akeson, Raffl, Bellemare, etc I really don't think they should be playing any higher than top 9 on a cup winning team. Don't know if I see Laughton with enough offensive flair to be that 2nd line center, but a pair of him with Couturier on the 3rd line for the next 10 years is nothing to sniff at either.

I guy like Raffl should play higher then the 4th line on the 3rd line. He is fast, has good hockey sense, and he is all over the puck. When he's out there, and the Flyers don't have the puck, he is on the hunt. It's all about puck pressure. All over the ice, in all 3 zones. If you don't have it, get it back.

Its been confirmed by Timmay. Morin is a young Chris Pronger. It is never for Laughton as this was his 3rd chance to crack the lineup.

Gun to your head who are you keeping for the 4th line if it were between Jones and Akeson?

Morin is the next Chris Pronger or Zdeno Chara. Laughton is the next Bobby Clarke or Mike Richards.
