ya that was it! i have no problem with the badges. i ended up with either gold or silver most of the time. by no means athletic but not bad enough to get made fun of. the participation cert though? come on... some kids are just fat. no need to humiliate them.

I got an award of excellence once. Only once. I'll never forget the flexed arm hang. I couldn't straighten my arms for the rest of the day.

It used to look different. The Award of Excellence was a round crest with a square extension on top.

I don't recall those...maybe after my time?

Did you grow up in BC? I know in Vancouver they were called Jr. Special Olympic badges. The words "Way to go!" were stitched into the bottom.

Trying to remember all the other events. Arm pull static hold - bar at eye level, shuttle run (I think that's what it was called?) 40 yard sprint. So much fun, and the schools took it very seriously...at least ours did.

I actually 3 of the Maroon ones ( it was the top award back in the early 80's). I had the total school record in grade 4,5 and 6 for long distance running. It was my athletic prime. Now I'm 30 lbs overweight , smoke a pack a day and have the ankles of an 80 year old woman.
