Claude Giroux confirmed that he is a go for tonight's game against the Rangers. The Flyers captain said he would see about Thursday's preseason finale in Washington, while Flyers head coach Craig Berube said he'd like to get Giroux a second preseason game if possible.

Goaltender Ray Emery will get the start in goal and is slated to go the distance after Steve Mason played the entire game in New York last night and Rob Zepp played the full game in Newark on Sunday.

After the morning skate, Berube made some pointed comments about what he wants to see from his club over the next week. He said they are physically ready for opening night but also need to be mentally ready. The coach made no bones about the fact he is unhappy with the lack of competitiveness many of his veteran players have shown the last two games.

Berube said the club has not played a 200-foot game the last two nights. They have turned over too many pucks. They haven't been hungry enough for loose pucks, and haven't kept their feet moving. The coach said that things such as poor gap control and other bad habits can easily creep into the regular season unless the players go out and play the game properly day-in and day-out.

Part of being mentally ready to play, said Berube, is realizing there will be fallout from fans and media when things don't go well. He said his players must have the mental toughness to work through it and follow the right process for winning.

The coach reiterated that while there isn't too much to read into the preseason and that he dislikes the preseason schedule the team has had, there is no excuse for not competing. Berube said he wants his team's identity to be that of a strong puck possession team and a solid team at five-on-five -- and believes he has both the personnel and the means of getting better in those areas -- but it will only work if everyone commits themselves to it.

Man. I understand every word Berube's saying...I give them some slack because I'm a fan and the type of game the Flyers need to play is tough hockey. It's hard -- lots of skating, lots of discipline. It requires focus, attention to detail and mental sharpness.

They haven't shown it enough during this slog of games, which I, as a guy typing on a laptop, understand. I'd think it'd be hard to get up for a game, think you're beating the Maple Leafs when you've got Jay Rosehill and Zack Stortini and Zac Rinaldo and Nick Schultz and Blair Jones and various other fringe/bubble players dressed, when they're bringing JVR, Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul, Nazem Kadri and Tyler Bozak to the party, but at the same time, the coach knows what he wants to see.

This lineup is a legit NHL lineup tonight, and the vast majority of that roster wasn't playing last night. So it'd be nice for them to bring a little bit of controlled aggression and heightened performance.

Berube said he may take 23 players on the planned trip to practice in Cape Cod for opening night in Boston. Team officials have said they plan to carry seven defensemen into the season. If the Flyers carry 23 players for opening night, it means they will have 14 forwards. It appears that Blair Jones, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Jason Akeson are competing for two jobs with Jay Rosehill likely to be the 13th forward on the depth chart.
- bmeltzer

Man. I think Akeson deserves a shot, but man -- if PEB straight-up outplays him tonight, you have to wonder if he's just gonna get beat out for a slot, because Jones and PEB can play center and wing.

The kind that hurt less than the feeling you get when you watch the once proud Star Wars franchise fall into farcical territory thanks to George Lucas' creation of Jar Jar Binks.

So, I guess this means we'll see him in Episode 7.

People do love them some Boba Fett.

Can someone please explain to me why Boba Fett is such a beloved character? He gets like 6 minutes of screen time over the whole trilogy and is considered iconic.
- jmatchett383

because he's rad. if he got more time, he might turn into Randy Jones.

I love making fun of Jar Jar as much as the next guy who grew up on the Original Star Wars trilogy, but I have an 8 YO who loves Star Wars and does like the prequels and really doesn't care what an old dude like me thinks about Jar Jar.

I like him most if I keep the prequels neuralyzed, Men In Black-style, from my brain.

I think the real reason for his popularity was his appearance in the Star Wars TV Christmas Special being the only thing of any value. He saved kids from about 4 minutes of otherwise unwatchable drek like the other 26 minutes.

I think PEB is a lock for 4C unless he gets injured.

Jones may have outplayed Akeson so far but I think Akeson is more likely to be claimed on waivers so he will start the season with the Flyers.

A week to go and he's still begging the players to buy-in? Yikes.

I'm old enough to remember that Christmas special. Such a giant let down.

One thing that stuck with me was being confused that the lady from Maude was part of Star Wars.
