So me and a bunch of my friends can beat the Blackhawks in a 7-game series of NHL-rules ice hockey if we try really, really hard?

It happens all the time and filling out a roster isn't easy, but I don't agree with carrying marginal players because of perceived intangibles.

Is he a good cook? If so, that could come in very valuable on long West Coast trips.

Well the Flyers haven't contacted me with an NHL offer yet. I wonder why not. I mean, I'll try, and I'll do it on a 2-way deal for league minimum.

In your opinion when is a really good time to carry marginal players?

That's what the AHL and ECHL are for.

I don't think it's perceived when the guy racks up penalty minutes with limited playing time.

In the Connor McDavid draft year...

Bollig played 10 minutes a night at ES last season. He scored more points, had similar possession numbers and took fewer penalties. Bollig isn't as prone to reckless play as Carcillo, either.

Carcillo has also been a better player than Rinaldo over the course of his career, based on offensive production and his possession stats show that when he played for both LA and Chicago, he largely bought in and played a more controlled game.

Carcillo has also been a little used guy when he was with LA and Chicago. He played 26 games as a King and 51 games over two seasons as a Blackhawk. Rinaldo has played 66, 32(out of 48) and 67 games over his Flyers career.

- Jsaquella

Carcillo is nuts... Rinaldo at a younger age is showing better smarts than Carcillo. Carcillo has got 5 yrs more experience than Rinaldo. Neither player is being looked at to score goals, its like ranking goalies by offensive production. At the same age as Rinaldo, Carcillo had 194 hits / 207 PIM - I'd rather have Rinaldo 200+ hits / 175PIM.

Let's see how it goes this year. After all it's not like this is a cup year.
- JoeRussomanno

So, ignore the first three years of his career?

Absolutely. Improved 5 on 5 play is paramount for this team, if they want to move forward.
- MJL

Yup, and that starts with having the puck more than the opponent... and a #1 dman isn't the only way to go about doing that.

No, absolutely use the first three years of his career as a short leash.

Show me one area he has improved in. He's still a lousy possession player. He still runs around on defense looking for big hits. He's still undisciplined and takes too many penalties.

Where is the improvement? One season-a lockout shortened season, to boot-he drew penalties at a slightly higher rate than he took them. That was it. 32 games of drawing more penalties that he took, and immediate regression the next season. There's been no progress as a player, and no permanent progress as an effective "pest"

In terms of needing energy, when your top guys have to play 20+ minutes because your 4th line is (frank)ing useless, it tires guys out

- Jsaquella

He was in better position last year than he was his first year, again, I am going of what I saw watching the games, not what I can google in stats to prove my point...you hate the player, not going to get you off of that point, you also hate the make up with the 4th line, that I can agree with...I think the team has far to long gone with out a 4th line that can eat minutes and by the end of the season our top lines are worn down...

he does take bad penalties and has had been on the wrong end of the refs whistle (unfairly sometimes because of what he did his first year in)

but he is progressing, for the role the team has for him...if he wasn't he would not be on the team...they just don't have the personnel to play 4th line role...and most Vets are not looking for 650K to do that, so witht he lack of cap flexability Zac R is what we have...

What timeframe for each of these players are you getting these hits/PIM numbers from? Also, I'm fairly sure that, over that time frame, Carcillo scored more (slightly more, but still more). Also, Carcillo racked up the PIM is fights and misconducts and didn't leave his team shorthanded as much as Rinaldo. Carcillo also played more minutes than Zac did (presumably) so their PIM/60 minutes is probably closer than raw data.

I want to go on record: Blues vs Tampa in the finals. Blues get their first cup. Philly out in second round, exceeding expectations. Vinny with a massive season and traded at the end of it.

Carcillo has two double digit goal seasons in his NHL career. Rinaldo doesn't have ten goals in his career.

Neither is being expected to provide offense, but the goal totals show that Carcillo has more skill than Rinaldo. Carcillo, in his prime could slide up to a third line and actually be a solid contributor. Rinaldo hasn't shown he can do that.

At this stage, yes, Carcillo isn't what he was before. But when he was Zac's age, he was a superior player

But then they'd have to trade an asset + the #2 overall pick to draft him.

Or just take Eichel, who's probably just as good of a player and probably a better fit w/ Giroux anyway.

Having a #1 defeseman would certainly help. But I agree, in that the Flyers can improve there without adding a single player.
