Maybe. Maybe not. I think A LOT has been covered up or ignored here. Simmonds gave away the puck to JvR the other night as if that never happens.

At even strength, Ryan has played with much better linemates than Simmonds and in a first line role.

He put up that 28 goal season playing with a premier playmaking center in Ryan Getzlaff. Simmonds has played with nobody in Getzlaff's class as a playmaker regularly at ES.

I'm not against adding Ryan. Just think with the same opportunities and quality of linemates, Simmonds could match his output, which goes for Read and Schenn, as well.

I see no need to sign Ryan to a huge FA deal, when they can get close to his level of production from guys already on the team.

- Jsaquella

Briere is no Getzlaf but when you have Briere 5 on 5 and Giroux on the PP, that's pretty good for hisfirst two seasons as a Flyer. You can add Voracek to this mix as well.

Probably not...but with the cap friendly contracts of some of the young guys coming up, they would have the room to add him if that is the direction they wanted to go...
his 5-5 play does help an issue we have had the past 2-3 years...he is not the best solution, but he does have a ton of talent and would not be a negative addition to the team...

- JW98FlyerFan

The problem is, his 5 on 5 play is skewed because he's always been used at 5 on 5 with his team's best players. Simmonds, Schenn and Read have not. Maybe if Simmonds or Read had spent 82 games with Giroux their numbers are even better than Ryan's at ES.

We don;t know because it's never been tried by the Flyers. Ryan isn't going to come in and score 50 goals playing with Giroux. I don;t think it's crazy to think Simmonds couldn't score 10 more ES goals playing with Giroux on a rgular basis

Briere is nowhere near Getzlaff. Especially regular season Briere. And if you want to look Simmonds first two seasons as a Flyer vs Ryan during the same time, Simmonds scored 43 goals. Ryan had 42.

Why are Simmonds are Bobby Ryan being compared?

Different players who bring different styles.

- bradleyc4

It's apples to oranges, but SSB keeps insisting that Ryan's the more productive goal-scorer, when there's nothing at all to back that up:

Simmer's shot totals and SH%'s mirror Ryan's almost identically.
Read's G/60 numbers at ES mirror Ryan's almost identically.

As a pure finisher, he might have an edge... but from a production/practical standpoint, he doesn't have much of an edge, if at all.

So if wayne simmonds and Matt read are 1st line wingers like Ryan why aren't they playing on the 1st line?
- psuhockey

Because the Flyers have had other guys capable of playing first line roles during the time they have been there. the Flyers have been one of the deepest offensive teams in the NHL the past 8-10 years

The only problem I have is his misuse of the word "unquestionable". Which means "not up for debate". It is clearly debatable, and has been debated pretty well.

Exactly. It's far from unquestionable that one is better than the others. That's all I'm trying to say.

And how does a turnover in a pre-season game have anything to do with goal scoring ability?
- Jsaquella

The turnover is what dug up this whole conspiracy. Lots of government cover ups.

No, Ryan played on a bad team with two pretty good players. MacArthur is a 3 time 20 goal scorer and Kyle Turris is a very good young player. In fact it's not too far fetched to say that Ryan's linemates in Ottawa were better than Simmonds' linemates in Philly, at least at even strength.

Yes, Simmonds splayed with a better player on the PP, and they were highly effective. The excellence of the Flyers PP balances out the fact that Ottawa gave Ryan better line mates at 5 on 5. Despite PP usage, Simmonds and Ryan do spend more time on ice at ES than they do on the PP.

Not sure how using two players gives me an edge. It's just an example that the Flyers have at least two guys that could put up similar numbers to Ryan if they had similar usage, which would mean that Ryan is not unquestionably a better goal scorer.

- Jsaquella

Not sure how you can name Ryan's line mates as being good or great players but I cannot name Simmonds and Read's supporting cast over the course of three seasons as a Flyer. Couturier and Read are expected to be bumped up in the line up because both have more to give. I'm not seeing why we shouldn't want Ryan while our players still see opportunities.

Because he doesn't fill a glaring need and he would command a price of at least $7 mill per year. Not worth it.

It would be ignorant to believe Getzlaf has set the table for every single goal Ryan has scored. It would also be ignorant to ignore the fact the Flyers have had a better offensive roster during Ryan's time with the Ducks over a year ago. Even Max Talbot managed 19 goals with Flyers on a really good offensive team. The Flyers don't have just one good player, they have a few.

Could just be some time off. Schedule is pretty brutal for them right now. They may be part of the contingent playing the Phantoms Flyers game.

This is wishful thinking on my part if you didn't notice

Ryan commanding 7 million is speculation. If he wants this type of money, you don't sign him. Simple.

Your point about better offensive players kind of makes my point. Having that much depth takes opportunities away from Simmonds. Having less guys gives more opportunity to Ryan.

I'm not saying Getzlaff has set the table for every goal Ryan scored. but to act as if that had no impact on Ryan's production is being ridiculous.

He's already making north of 5 million per year. Meaning his asking price will be between 6 and 7 mill at least. Still not worth it.

Whatever he ends up getting for a contract will be about what Read and Simmonds make combined.

I've said it before, I have zero interest in Ryan unless Simmonds, Schenn or Voracek is traded for defensive help
