I just want hockey to watch hockey once again.
I don't want to argue .
I don't want to debate why I think Mike Weber is a very good 5th, 6th defenseman.
I just want to watch our Buffalo Sabres and dream about a Stanley Cup one day.
I have to say that I think just about everyone that posts here on Mike's blogs has a very good understanding about hockey.
And Buffalo Sabres hockey for that matter.
We all sometimes just may have a different view.
Here's to y'all and posting for another season with some pretty knowledgeable fans here.
Enjoy the season y'all.

Hat-

I am a fan of Mike Weber, too. I think Mike gets unfairly harsh treatment around here. I wonder if it's because his game is more of an "eyeball test" style, rather than a stat sheet style. Lots of what Mike does well never gets recorded on the stat sheet.

On the other hand, nobody can quarrel with those embarrassing moments that seem to involve him too often. Those all seem to be things that are captured in the game data.

Anyway, I think he's a guy I want on this team. There I said it.

Ouch

Basically he wont be playing any meaningful games this season, an expected February return

Lets hope they don't finish last.

fair points. my follow up question to you is: if you like him here currently does that mean you would like him here for a cup run a few years down the road?

I would want the best 6 d-men we could afford under the salary cap. If Mike fits into that Algebra I'm ok with it. If not, I'd thank him for his work and wish him good luck.

Id like to root for him. Plays hard, physical, will drop the gloves. He just doesn't have enough skill to make up for the dumb things he routinely does.

Hopefully, going back to being the 6-7th guy will help simplify his role

okay understandable. Hes fine wih me now but imo would have to think we could get a better defenseman at the same or better cap hit when were ready for the cup

I agree with you. I think if he is playing a role in the 5-6 pairings, he will have less of those embarrassing moments.

With the defensemen we have in our system I'd be willing to be he's long gone before any cup run of ours

I think Weber is as good an NHL damn as dozens of other guys in the NHL.

I think he suffers from negative "confirmation bias" around these pages. We see the mistakes we want to see, and overlook the solid play that doesn't support his reputation as a bungler.

That could be argued. He doesn't pass the "eye test" or the advanced statistics test. At least for most

I always watch for players like him when I go to the games out here. He stands up for his teammates and does what he can in the situation he is in. If he's over his head, the mistakes come out. I think every player has those bonehead moves that we wish they wouldn't, but his play seems to excite the populous more than it should.

I think one of the righties will eventually be moved. Especially if Pysyk is too good for a 5-6 role

If Pysyk is one of the 6 in front of him at 7, I disagree. It's easier to find a stronger guy than Pysyk, in that role, than it is to find a better guy than Weber, in his.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying you think Weber is better than Pysyk?

What "role" are you referring to?

No.

I'm saying they are two different kind of d-men. Pysyk is a puck mover jump into the O and Weber is strictly a stay at home cover that back end guy.

I think Weber is a better stay at home guy than Pysyk is a puck mover.

So I would keep Weber and move Pysyk before I would keep Pysyk and move weber.

I realize others would come to the opposite conclusion.

I am one of those "others". I don't think Pysyk is as offensively gifted as some do but I do think he can handle his own zone just fine.

I think Pysyk is a better stay at home guy and puck mover than Weber. If we have a 1 goal lead with a minute left I'd rather have Pysyk on the ice than Weber.

He's better period. The sample size with Weber is too big. He's done improving at 27 years old, he is what he is. A below average player with a below average hockey IQ.

It could be I'm looking for what I want to see from Pysyk. But I see blown defensive assignments from him regularly.

(PS - I have no idea What his +/- was last year and don't think much of the stat in any event [especially on the 13-14 Sabres]).
