Because it's usually not cool with players if their star player goes down and their only reward is a 5 minute major.

Same reason why (some) families aren't happy when a person kills a loved one and the punishment is having to pay taxes for the next 30 years for that person to live.

it cost them nothing to qualify him. thats why. doesnt effect the balance of anything. as you said maybe they trade him later for an asset. him being qualified doesnt mean he is in their plans at all

It affects off season cap space, and it takes up a contract slot on the reserve list. The reason to give a player a Q offer is to retain his rights.

It's why everyone loves Batman.

But hey, as long as you're satisfied that the Flyers will be on the PP for 5 minutes if a guy throws a dirty hit and takes Giroux out for the year, good for you.

Yeah, the used contract slot is not cool at all.

Well they're likely going to be at 47, with 3 available. So it's not a big deal. But the point is it's not "free" to qualify a player like Gustafsson who you know is going overseas to play.

i am not so sure about that as if he never signs the offer how can it effect cap space? all it is about is retaining rights.

since the contract is not signed it does no take up one of the 50 i dont believe. not sure what reserev list you mean.

In a nutshell, any time an RFA is tendered a Q.O. that player takes up a contract slot until his rights have been moved via trade or some other means.

My feeling on that though is if you're a player who is willing to cause an injury to a star player like Giroux and keep him out of the lineup for a year, I doubt that player is really concerned about the on-ice consequences that might come from an opposing enforcer.

Not to the "enforcer." You do it to the other team's star player.

any idea if it was one way or two offer? i imagine the offer expires after the season is over by a certain date. i also imagine they can renounce it at any time.

Pretty sure retaining a player's rights with a qualifying offer does actually take up a contract spot. Gus is on this list - http://capgeek.com/flyers/reserve-list/

Morin and Hagg look like they are slide rule eligible at the moment.

I think that where you hope the league and officials will step in to police the players and legislate some of the more egregious shenanigans out of the game.

Weber should have been suspended for that thing... it was pretty indefensible.

Shanahan bottled it. Hopefully the new guy isn't such a chicken poop when it comes to disciplining star players.

Hypothetically, if player X is willing to cause injury to Giroux, an injury that would take G out of the lineup for a year, I doubt player X cares about any retribution that might happen on the ice.

Meaning, having Jay Rosehill in the lineup isn't necessarily going to make a difference. They would certainly fight it out, but at that point, G is already injured. I don't see how the enforcer presence would matter much.

His last contract was one-way, I don't believe they can offer him a two-way QO.

The QO expires sometime in December, I believe.
They can't renounce it.

Edit: after looking it up, I was wrong about the two points above.

QO expires on July 15, but still counts on the off-season cap until player is signed. Gus doesn't meet the criteria for one-way only QO so it was probably $1M 2-way.

He only counts toward the off-season cap. On day 1 of the season, he's $0.

That's exactly what I said. You don't go after Player X. You go after the best player on Player X's team.

With Sanheim, there was likely no way he was making the team. In Morin's case, he's a guy that would probably benefit by heading to the AHL. This way the Flyers get extra coaching time with Morin before they ship him off to Rimouski.
- Jsaquella

Even if Sanheim went above & beyond their expectations he'd still have been sent back to get the ice time, improve his game, & add muscle.

Gotcha. I think I thought you were saying that Flyers need Jay Rosehill in the lineup or else a player X would injure Giroux, thereby keeping him out of the lineup all season.
