Not paranoid. Just stating that people will sing a different tune if something like that would happen. I am not for or against the enforcer but if he is the 13th forward i am ok with that. i would rather rosehill take his shift and run at someone if that is what is needed then Simmonds.
- J35Bacher

Rinaldo is an every day player if you really think we need someone who will run the other teams stars. Also having a goon like Rosehill on the 4th line who gets outscored by a huge margin in his limited ice time is a recipe for failure.

Guys like Giordano and Rafalski headed overseas when nobody thought they were worth a damn... they came back and killed it. If Gus keeps playing well over there, and some roster spots end up opening up here next summer, it's plausible that he could come back and be terrific.
- Tomahawk

plausable sure. unlikely absolutely. you name 2 exmaples. what about the countless players who didnt make it?

if gus was in the flyers plan presently or in the future you really think they let him slip off to russia?

But (and I'm not advocating this) if you have a Rosehill or Rinaldo in the lineup who will go out and injure Crosby in retaliation, it may not happen to begin with. Disagree?
- jmatchett383

No.

Scott went after Kessel despite the Leafs being loaded w/ truculence.

I don't recall anybody brazenly going after Datsyuk or Zetterberg like that despite the Wings choosing not to dress anybody more intimidating than Jordin Tootoo in recent years.

poop happens... doesn't matter what deterrent you have on the roster.

it could be worth what you say though it also cound be worth nothing do you agree?

you seem to think he is a legit nhl top 6 dman. i do not.

- rinaldo

I think he is. Looking around the NHL, I have little doubt Gustafsson could find a regular job somewhere.

If he's worth nothing then he's worth nothing. I would have rather he get a leash as long as Meszaros, Schenn or others when it came to being benched after a mistake.

But how could you forget immortals like:
Magnus Roupe
Al Hill
Patrick Juhlin
Jiri Latal
Bruce Hoffort
Drew Callender
Brian Dobbin

- BiggE

That only one I was around for (and remember) is Patrick Juhlin. All I know is that I had his 94/95 Flair rookie card many moons ago.

Gus wanted a chance to get huge minutes, which he wouldn't get anywhere in the NHL this season. Good luck to him over there.

Yeah, and their "truculent" player came off the bench and got 10 games for it. Plus, Kessel is about 50% to blame, as he pushed Scott (stupidly). And you don't remember anyone taking shots at Zetterberg? Maybe Mr. Shea Weber can smash your head into the glass to jog your memory. Or maybe Mr. Malkin can jump you from behind at the end of a SCF game.

the KC Cheifs played 7-8 games against back up or 3rd string QBs.....

Kelly took a 4-12 team, changed the Defense to 3-4 w/o having the proper personel and turned the team around. Reid would not have accomplished anywhere near these results. Yes, they caught some breaks, but they still had to take advantage of them.

Rosehill is a fighter, not a guy who will go out and run a star. Rinaldo is, but again, using the playoffs as an example, Giroux got hit every shift, Rinaldo didn't deter it in the least.

And let's face it, if you face a guy like Neil or Tootoo, they won't fight Rosehill, they will run guys and turtle or skate away if Rosehill engages them. It happens with them all the time

he obviously isnt in the flyers plans or he would still be here imo.

the coaches ( 2 of them), for better or worse, didnt think he was good enough either. those guys you mentioned have had some success therefore get the longer leash.

Then I guess Taco Pizza is out too?

The place I go to also, but too infrequently, makes Garlic Chicken Pizza with Alfredo sauce and a Grilled Steak Pizza with A1 sauce.

There's almost nothing you can do to a Pizza that I won't at least give a try.

That is what i am trying to say. Yes Adams might go after Giroux. Then I am sending Rinaldo out for Crosby. If something stupid happens i would rather lose Rinaldo then someone of importance like Simmonds.

But, to jump on the other side, you're basically using one of your 12 forwards as an insurance policy as opposed to player who can skate a regular shift.

The best solution is to have a veteran guy who can play a regular shift without hurting you, can handle any problems on the ice, and can chip in offensively. Flyers-era Brashear was a prime example of this guy.

Yeah, it's mostly the obligatory staged stuff between heavies. The 'Code' pretty much prevents them from going after anybody else -- even rats.

Completely unrelated...

Name to watch: Bogdan Yakimov... 6'5 232, skilled C, probably going to make the Oilers out of camp.

I agree with the original premise that Gus would have found a job in the top-6 most teams. I think the Flyers were just worried about his smaller stature, and that he was not a physical player, or even like a guy like MacD, who isn't overly physical, but still battles. Gus didn't do much of that in his time here.

Lol, I did forget about that Weber thing. Man was that blatant.

Zetterberg/Malkin... they fought after that, didn't they?

Correct. Your right. that is why I was kind of Hoping to see a Laughton - Bellemare- White 4th line. I think they would have been able to chip in some offense and be a pain to play against

Also people have to look at Preseason, Regular Season, playoffs as three different animals. They all have kind of different rules for situations.

Yes, but he still got cheapshotted and jumped from behind. Detroit responded to the Weber thing by dressing Bertuzzi who fought Weber. So there's your "enforcer" dressing a playoff game as a response.

Preseason is a whole different animal, JS. You know that. There's no line matching yet, players have linemates they'd never have in a RS game. There are more fights, etc., because there are more fringe players trying to get noticed.
- bmeltzer

Been trying to get that point across for a couple of days now.

If he is not in the flyers plans, why did they issue him a qualifying offer?

Laviolette actually used Gustafsson Quite a bit. I'm not saying he's a great player, but overall he played well enough when he got the chance to be in the flyers top sex last season. If you want to use coaching decisions as a justification, this is the same coach that decided to dress No Skill Hal Gill for a playoff game after he play four regular-season games

Absolutely they are different. The preseason is meaningless for most non-prospects. That is why you can dress your 4th line of goon-scrub-goon and it doesn't matter.
