Vinny for Liles... they'd actually save $500k in actual salary for the next couple of seasons, then they could take advantage of the $1.5M difference in cap-hit and salary for the remaining couple of seasons of Vinny's deal.

For the Flyers, it would be another Hartsy for Umberger kind of deal to get out of contract years.

I dunno, like I said, pure fantasy, and depends on how long Staal is out.

- Tomahawk

It might be worth looking into but Liles isn't much of anything these days either. Plus Vinny would be on the books longer for Carolina and he seems to be fading fast.

Better to keep him, at least this year, than eat half his salary to trade him for pennies.
- NickTheKid87

To me, this is why it is crucial to have a fourth line that can actually play -- there are things that Vinny will do that will help -- he is going to score.goals. He wins faceoffs, usually.

But if you have a fourth line that can be deployed for 10 or so minutes and plays consistent defense, you can hide Vinny's deficiencies that much more.

It depends on how they view it, as always. But there are some guys under contract who could likely help in that role, if they do go that route.

Straight out of fantasy land, but does anybody here think J Staal breaking his leg opens up a sliver of a chance for a Vinny trade?
- Tomahawk

Nah, it just improves Carolina's already good chances of landing McDavid.

I could also see Lecavalier being better this year. His point per game total last season (0.54) was well below his career average (0.82). His PPG average in Tampa was 0.84 so he dropped 0.30 with the Flyers. That's about 25 points over an 82 game season. I would expect him to get back over 0.60 PPG, maybe even to 0.70 or higher. That's between 49 and 57 points over 82 games. I doubt he'll play more than 72 games though. He hasn't done that since 2009-10.

If he can put up 50-60 pts in 60-70 games and not be awful on defense, I would be pretty fine with that.

Any truth to the fact that Hagg can "slide" if he plays in the AHL since he's 19? I thought only CHL players could slide, not so sure now.
- jmatchett383

A player playing professional hockey and getting paid in the AHL, can't have his contract slide. Haag will be paid based on the AHL salary negotiated in his 2 way EL contract.

That's what I thought. It's just that the CBA doesn't expressly say it has to be a CHL player. It just says (paraphrasing) "a player under 20 years old who does not play more than 9 games in the NHL can have his contract slide" more or less.

After looking it up at Capgeek, I may be wrong. I think it depends on what league the player came from, but if he is 19, it can still slide in the AHL. There have been a couple of players where that has been the situation. To sum it up, not really sure. I was under the impression that a contract can't slide while playing professional hockey.

It just doesn't happen often. Like Nylander, if he doesn't make the Leafs, already said he's going back to MODO.

Yeah, it's confusing. Like I said, the CBA doesn't state "professional hockey" it's very specific to the NHL. It's basically a loophole for non-CHL players under 20.

Apparently the Flyers training staff isn't the only one that makes mistakes:

Agreed. If he can be not terrible overall and put up fairly good offensive numbers, I'll be...less not okay with it.

Kind of prescient of them to sign Matt Lombardi this summer.

It looks like some posters would rather discuss the definition of completely then discuss the point at hand, that is Stepan and his broken leg, and whether the existence of Sather's purported third eye is indeed true, due to his signing of a solid player like Lombardi this summer, and whether that constitutes cap mismanagement, or evidence of false data in Corsi, and all its derivatives. And also you're just making my point. I am available to discuss the sport of Hockey, the topic of advanced stats, and the nature of the salary cap with you at any time.
