Loved watching McLaren and Stortini.

I'd rather just let Mathers handle all problems down there. Stortini and Koci are arguably two of the worst fighters of the last decade.

I was glad to see Raff-El of Krypton and his nemesis Stolzar finally be able to coexist on the same team.

- MBFlyerfan

so thats who Rof-fel is....Bob Mcgill, the analyst in the both got Stolarz's name right once in the third....I thought someone got to him....but he went right back to Stolzar the next time.....

Yeah, leading a league in fighting majors is never a flattering thing... just means not many guys fear you enough to say no.

Mathers was actually one of the better fighters in the OHL when he was down there. Players wanted to fight him for the same reason 5 guys asked Morin to fight, because they want to make a name for themselves. He can handle himself just fine.

Was Bob Probert a terrible fighter the year he had 398 PIM? Not comparing the two players, just saying that, just because you have a lot of fights doesn't mean you suck at it.

That's what I'm thinking. The only vets who really stood out (aside from Braydon Schenn still not knowing to to throw a clean hit in the corner) were Jake and Streit. They were mostly just going through the motions.
- jmatchett383

I kind of thought Schenn was actually trying to pull back on that hit and that's why he jumped, as opposed to launching into the player. I mean they're still going to call it when you leave your feet but I really think he tried to soften the blow.

If he wanted to soften the blow, he should have just bumped into him. He was a good foot and a half off his feet when he made contact. He's very lucky the guy wasn't hurt badly, as you can't control yourself in mid-air.

That doesn't happen in Hockey. Enforcers don't fear other fighters, to the point of saying no. What they fear is being out of a job.

B Schenn also needs to learn how to take a hit. Turning at the last moment and taking a shot in the back is not a good way to stay healthy. He should also never fight again. He is not good at it.

Overall, the powerplay looked great against the Caps. The young defensemen were smooth with the puck and skating.

Game 1 of the preseason in the books. I like the youth in this organization. Hopefully Giroux is healthy for the season.

I thought he handled himself good in the fights...Mclaren fight was close to a draw...and that guys a beast...He won the other one. Both him and Mathers can guard the young kids.

I thought the same thing when I watched it live. On the replay, everyone around me kinda changed their tune. We went full-blown airborn on that hit. Not quite Downie-style, but bad.

Oh, well, yes, he's the other way: a guy who needs to keep trying to prove his worth. I give him props for being willing, but he's just not a good fighter.

I think he came up just before making contact, but it was a few inches, not 18.

Okay, maybe it wasn't a Dikimbe Mutumbo rebound leap, but he definitely had some very noticeable, clear-cut separation between his skates and the ice.

That could be possible. But 18 inches? That would have been remarkable.

Steve Downie could do it. And did. Poor Dean McAmmond, possibly the worst 2 consecutive games in history. Season-ending elbow by Pronger in the SCF, then the Downie hit in the first preseason game next year.

The vets looked fine.

Braydon Schenn ....is still Braydon Schenn. I'd like to see him stand out and assert himself while Giroux is out. Getting beat cleanly in your own zone on a SH draw that leads to a goal is not how you do that.

Downie basically turned himself into a missile on that play. In hindsight, it was pretty scary.

Colby Armstrong had made a living throwing those hits around that time. They had talked about the changes that off-season and threw the book at Downie.
