The game was not announced to the public and the media (and will be closed to the public and media) because that's what the Devils wanted. Craig Berube wasn't even 100 percent sure the game was at the Rock complex, because he's heading to Toronto to cover the Flyers-Leafs game.

* Saturday's game in Allentown will be more of a scrimmage type of game with a divided roster than a true "Flyers vs. Phantoms" game ala the final game at the Spectrum.

People have actually mentioned many valid reasons why they're not in favor of adding Bobby Ryan, and have done so numerous times.

Yes, if he's willing to accept 3 years at $4.5mm, great, add Bobby Ryan. The trouble is he just shot down a 7 year, $7mm per year offer. If you think he'll take significantly less from the Flyers...well, I doubt it.

- Jsaquella

maybe he shot it down because he doesn't want to stay there. not that a signing would prevent him from being moved. obviously. but he loses leverage/control.

Is the plan for Giroux to miss the entire camp, and all pre-season games, and be in the lineup October 8 in Boston?

Doesn't sound ideal.

Sounds like a 1-7 start and 0 goals in first 15 games for the Captain.

I think they will use Option 2 with both Pronger and Kimmo. On the first day of the season the bolded players will then be demoted to create $1.85 million of cap space, and Bellemere (who is waiver exempt until he plays in an NHL game) will be called up.

OPTION 2: Put the injured player on LTIR on the final day of training camp and, including the injured player’s annual average salary or cap hit, build a roster that exceeds the upper limit by an amount that is as close as possible to the injured player's annual average salary.

FORWARDS
Brayden Schenn ($2.500m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Matt Read ($3.625m) / Sean Couturier ($1.750m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
R.J. Umberger ($4.600m) / Vincent Lecavalier ($4.500m) / Jason Akeson ($0.575m)
Jay Rosehill ($0.675m) / Michael Raffl ($1.100m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
Petr Straka ($0.925m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Andrew MacDonald ($5.000m) / Braydon Coburn ($4.500m)
Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m) / Mark Streit ($5.250m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.300m) / Luke Schenn ($3.600m)
Nick Schultz ($1.250m) / Robert Hagg ($0.925m)
Chris Pronger ($4.941m) / Kimmo Timonen ($2.000m)

I know.. I posted it here more to mock it rather than to suggest everyone read it. I read like three lines and then saw that they are criticizing our tending without having watched 5 Flyers games over the last year... way to go Toronto sports media.

I wouldn't go that far. But you would like to see him get some practices in, and one game at least before the season starts.

I believe his eta is 2 weeks so that puts him playing maybe the 9/30 and 10/2 preseason games

Yeah, I think my friend is exaggerating. My fiancée and I went to see the Flyers vs Bruins at TD centre a couple years back and we wore our jerseys... some idiots yelled at us and we ignored them.
- Hextall271

Same thing when I went with my wife, lots of chirping, and it increased when the B's tied it 2-2 in the third, and they shut up when JR roofed a wrister from the left circle in OT and sent 'em packing!!!

Okay. Is Torrey Krug a better example for what Ghost could be 2-3 years from now? Could Morin be the 06-08 Coburn in 2-3 years? How about Hagg becoming 2009 L Schenn in 2 years? Are those realistic growth patterns?
- jmatchett383

My point isn't about so much as to what kind of player they're going to be, but more about what amount of time it's going to take realistically, until the current prospect base develops into top players. Which is a crapshoot.

Say for instance with Morin. It's realistic that he could make the team next year. Or is it more likely that he will see some AHL time. Then how many years until he reaches the point where he is a top defenseman for the team? Realistically, 3 years is maybe best case scenario. It's probably more likely closer to 5 years until these young defenseman go through growing pains and development time, until the form the core of a playoff caliber contending team.
That's a number of seasons and Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, Mason, all getting older.

I think people need to expect him to be the first Sam Morin and not the next Chris Pronger. He's definitely not as good a prospect as Pronger was and will probably never be the same level player. I'd be happy if he was a nastier version of Coburn.
- Jsaquella

Meaner Coburn would still be a helluva pick, and I agree that's probably where his potential maxes out... unless he blossoms in a MAJOR way with the puck in the next 24-mos or so.

I think a 2016-17 lineup of:

MacDonald (30) - Coburn (31)
Morin (21) - Ghost (23)
Hagg (21) - Streit (38)

is better than what we have now, and would not be a rebuild. The chances of getting a real stud dman in here as a FA or via a trade are tiny.

- Feanor

I can't say it's better. It certainly could be. You've got 3 pretty young defenseman in the lineup there.

Kind of seems like more of a middle tier, than strictly cup contender or rebuilding caliber. What's the alternative, though? We could keep Luke Schenn back there (and let's assume he does find consistency), but that doesn't really bump the quality up to cup contender levels either.
- BulliesPhan87

I guess it depends on how they develop, and how fast. My only point is that there is going to have to be some patience until these guys get to where they need to get to as players, if at all. And there is a disparity between where the team is with the forward ranks, and the future of the defense. And I think this goes back to how not developing defenseman in the past, is hurting the team. And I'm not sure if they're not going to have to make a move.

White is a bit of a fly in the ointment... they can't demote him while he's injured, right?

I don't think you let L Schenn walk away, and I don't think Morin, Ghost and Hagg are the top 3 D men in the system that will be NHL ready at that point...

MDZ could still be here and is clearly father along, Alt and Sanheim have shown to be further along in developement...so I think there are a few more iterations of D lines to look at before the one you threw out would happen...
