Very excited about this pick sir!

As was I, excited to see him a few times with Calgary when he's sent back & I can watch online.

I completely agree with this point.
- TheGreat28

Agreed. None of the prospects are any good, and it's impossible for any of them to have a large impact on the team until 2022.

I agree, I may have mis-worded my thoughts earlier. What I meant, in terms of individual potential, is that none are currently considered to be like a Pronger, Doughty, Weber, etc. aka that "true" number one defensemen everyone wants.
- NickTheKid87

Yes, none of them are turnkey, sure fire #1 guys.... but many of the league's current and past #1 guys weren't either (and we're all familiar with ones that were considered to be, but amounted to much less).

They've got 3-4 shots at developing a top-pair dman in the chamber now... that's a pretty big improvement. I for one am very optimistic about Ghost, in particular.

That chance is really gonna depend on if other players (Pulock, for example) make the jump to the NHL this year. I think he'll get a camp invite but is a bubble player.
- jmatchett383

Not really, even going by those who made the summer Canadian WJC development camp the D is pretty stacked.

But from those I talked to as scouts for each league, he has a chance but he'll have to step up his game even more but it's not out of the realm that has no or a limited chance.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that most fans know that the defense lacks that top player, and hasn't developed much internally. So a lot of it is hope, and excitement that the team has a good staple of defensive prospects. But I agree that they're being overhyped somewhat. Not just in terms of how good they might be, but also how fast they are going to "come to the rescue".
- MJL

Travis Sanheim I believe has the best chance at possibly being a top pair guy with a balanced game. I'm actually concerned that Morin might be over hyped.

They're too focused on how bad the Blue and Gold (Michigan) are playing here in the D. They're not making fun of this enough if at all here. This is pretty.

I believe you are being negative and a lacking faith that they could develop into exactly what you are saying they won't.

You are projecting out years ahead into the unknown, that is not being reasonable to at least me.

But have at it, you seem to have firmly planted you're feet in the ground with it.

- ob18

I don't think he's being negative. It's all probabilities and statistics. It's the difference between looking at the prospects individually and judging each of them on their upside, versus looking at the group as a whole and applying statistics to ESTIMATE their future path.

Go back over the last 10 years of Hockey's Future and find any organization that had four highly regarded prospects and then see how the four did. 1 probably had a major injury that derailed his career. 1 probably never made it out of the minors. 1 may have become an all-star with the last either an all-star or a contributing player. If the last guy is an all-star, meaning two all-stars out of that group of four, the organization did really well.

Think back to the draft years with Nodl, Marshall and Bourdon. I thought all of these guys were going to be good players. I checked St. Cloud State's scores and stats after every game convinced Nodl would be the next Gagne. Didn't happen for any of them.

Now, that group is not as talented as the current four. But history says they all won't reach as high as we'd like.

What I like most about the crop is that there is a lot of potential so the chances of one of them turning into a top pairing guy is much better than it has been in years. No matter how things are going to turn out, the future of the defense right now is much brighter than it has been since Pronger went down.

Does that count as a football-related injury? Like how MiN suspended Harding w/o pay for the kicking thing?

(sorry, I have no idea how it works in the NFL)

Never said all 4 will but I won't write any off right now, because again we don't know what will happen, you can't always go by statistics because how often have things happened that defy those or leave people with no reasonable way to explain what has happened.

It's true things can happen that change the outcome but let's see how things go before assuming that within a short time of them being drafted.

No one is writing anybody off. And you're misunderstanding the use of statistics and probability in this situation. What TheGreat28 and I are saying is that probability says that not all of them are likely to pan out, for one reason or another, based on historic data. We are NOT saying anything is impossible. Don't confuse possibility with probability. The former is black and white while the latter is gray.

Based on history and looking at it statistically, that's not unreasonable. But I don't think you can apply that thinking to each individual player, and state, well Morin isn't a good prospect and won't be a #1 because what are the odds?

I think it's reasonable to say that chances are, all of the top defense prospects the Flyers have aren't going to all work out. But I don't think that should be applied to individual players.

I think for individuals, you should look at each player, and what he brings to the table. For instance, I don't have any doubts about Ghostibehere's skating and puck skills. But I do have doubts about his size and ability to defend and handle the physicality of the NHL. But really only time will tell.

I want to see Simmonds drop a hat trick then rag doll the guy who threw the banana at him at centre ice.. On the sportsnet talk show, the guys were advising all London hockey fans to leave their fruit at home for tonight's game.. hah

I'm black and I was almost at that game. My buddy talked me out of it because it wasn't a regular season game and he's cheap.

I agree. Still, I don't think the chances are that anyone will be a #1. A 2-3 is more likely as is 4-6. Worse than that is unlikely too. Standard bell curve stuff for each guy.

If you agree, then I don't see how you can still not think that anyone has a chance to be a #1. Based on their individual potential, both Morin and Sanheim have the potential to develop into a #1 defenseman.

I didn't say their wasn't a chance. I think it's possible but not as likely as them being 2-3 dmen. I'm not saying Morin or Sanheim developing into a #1 dman has a low probability either, just that it's not the MOST probable outcome.
