This is where shot based possession stats tend to fall short, as teams that shoot the puck in often tend to register a larger number of lower percentage shots on net, whereas teams that are patient, and actually maintain possession of the puck, are successful because while holding onto that puck, they are simultaneously positioning themselves for higher percentage chances, and denying the other team the ability to register any.
