It's been a rocky start for the Reds for sure. We'll see how it goes. Having said that, Aston Villa is playing very well right now. It was not so much an embarrassing loss as a frustrating one.

Wow, never thought about that but, is it possible that a team performs better with a good goaltender???
- Pecafan Fan

That rule applies to every team except the Leafs, when their number one goalie goes down with injury, and they subsequently lose a string of games it's 100% due to their poor possession numbers catching up to them.

It's not poor possession numbers catching up with them, it's poor play. The poor possession numbers are neither cause nor effect; they simply help to quantify areas that they should look at whether they can improve, because it sure as poop isn't "grit".

Yet everyone says they have to improve their possession numbers. Of course they have to improve their play but possession numbers can be a reflection of the style of play. If you play dump and chase and are good on the fore check you can be play well without having great possession numbers. The same goes with the trap. If you don't play a lot of dump and chase or trap your possession numbers might be good but your play might not.

But if you ply dump and chase and nobody forechecks you are the Leafs leading the league I turnovers and shots against

Great first day skating with the @StLouisBlues. Always tough working in new gloves and pants but felt great.

This.

We don't have a team built to forecheck and retrieve the puck. The best thing to do is hold onto the puck and maintain possession, even if it means regrouping a little and taking one step backwards to open up two steps forward.

They certainly weren't going to beat teams like Chicago and LA, but with a healthy Bernier in the net they were headed for a playoff berth in the east. It's obvious what the team's flaws are, but the talent level they have was able to overcome them, up until Bernier's injury.

This is still very much the infancy of advanced stats. Everything from the methods that gather the data to the actual meaning of the data can be questioned.

Puck sensors, player sensors and some clever people writing algorithms would make for some real interesting information on skating, positioning, possession, shooting tendency ... It would be cool to see that stuff, instead of a bunch of Yost graphs that put me to sleep.

I think a lot of the issues at the minute is down to how the data is presented. All of it is useful in the correct context, but if not presented correctly, it's essentially useless.

I'm definitely excited to see the stuff that will come with the player sensors

Yes, that's exactly it. The Leafs played dump and don't chase part of the time last season.

They are starting to do that now. I saw a show on it a couple of days ago. They're trying to use sensors on the boards to track player and puck movement.
