It's not a knock on his integrity to collect the money that he is owed that he negotiated for in a contract, in good faith, in my opinion. It's not as though he is just deciding not to play. It is not his fault that the blood clot issue happened.

Secondly, you're the only one bringing up Timonen coming back to play for the money. When it's pretty obvious based on what he has stated many times, which is he came back for another chance to win the Cup, which he hasn't achieved to this point in his career..

Funny. I don't recall ever stating he came back to play for the money.

You could put Matt Read or Wayne Simmonds on a line with Giroux and probably get 30 goals a year for the next 5 years. Plus in two years you have to re-sign Couturier, Schenn and Voracek.
- Jsaquella

neither read nor simmonds bring the kind of game that ryan does or they'd be playing LW with G right now.

Jake will cost top dollar most likely but by the time the flyers sign schenn and coots (probably next july) they will get a deal like JVR or Jake did in the $4-$4.5 million range for 4-6 seasons. Just a guess obviously. At the same time Coburn, Kimmo, Grossmann, and Luke will have expired contracts and hopefully are replaced with entry level contracts from guys like Morin, Sanheim, Ghost, etc. I don't think thats out of the question.

Nah.

I enjoy discussing differences of opinions. I just ask that you quote me accurately and in the correct context.

Disagree. Simmonds had more goals than Ryan just last year and is more physical and better in front of the net. He's not as good a shooter or as dynamic a player, but with Giroux and Voracek, you need somebody to do the dirty work.

As for Read, he's drawing insane defensive assignments and scoring 22 goals. It's not far fetched to think he'd score 8 more with increased offensive zone starts, with an elite playmaker like Giroux feeding him.

I also think they could get 25-30 goals from Brayden Schenn with a full year on Giroux's LW. I simply don't see the need to dump that much cash into a guy like Ryan. I just don't think a 30 goal scorer nearing age 30 is worth a 7 year commitment at $7mm a year.

I don't know....

Ryan-Giroux-Voracek
Schenn-Coots-Simmer
Umby-Laughts-Read

pretty enticing. they'd have to unload VL though.

I'd rather save the space in case a defense move comes along. I only have interest if they move Schenn, Simmonds or Voracek for a defenseman

So there's this class called pharmacotherapeutics which is terrifying. Walk in, take 7 pages of notes, which consist of drug name, adverse reactions, contraindications, directions, dosing, dosage forms....etc.....all organized by disease/health state.

We have to memorize all that.

Oh, right, we have about 40 pages worth of notes, and we still have 1 more class before the exam on Tuesday.

Needless to say, this class our lives. It's 24/7 flashcards/studying/shooting ourselves in the face.

To the point where I just crammed for 8 hours for an exam tomorrow, which I had not studied for before 2:00 today, because I've been studying for PnT my whole life.

Right, we still have 2 other major classes to worry about.

This year is terrible and it should feel terrible.

I want hockey.

And sleep. So I'll sleep. Night.

I didn't mean to imply you stated he just wanted to grab a check. On the contrary, I, like you, believe he's still in it because there's the slightest of chances that he'll play again.

But many players walked away for a myriad of reasons leaving money on the table. I'd just like to think the 2 mil never was an issue.

And you're right, there may be other factors involved.

Hell, I'd pay him that amount to stick around and mentor our youngsters on D.

- 77rams

One player was mentioned that walked away from money, Rafalski. Can you name another? There aren't many players who just walk away from guaranteed money. It's a complete rarity to do so.

I'd sign him for the 7x7 deal that supposedly OTT offered. He's 27, cost no assets, and can easily score 30 goals on G's line for the next 5 years straight.

I think Ryan is less one-dimensional than you think he is. He's got a great shot, solid speed and size, can check and battle on the boards, and is at worst an average defender. He's streaky - but pretty much all players in the NHL run hot and cold.

My only concern would be the final couple years of the contract but even then I'd worry about that in 5 years. Ive seen plenty of bad contracts dealt - Luongo, Campbell, Hartnell, just off the top of my head.

- moylander

We see a different player. I disagree that he is less one dimensional than I think he is. About the only thing he does well, is score goals. Other then that, he's a below average player. If I'm going to commit that kind of money and term to a player, I want a player who not only can score, but does a lot of the little things well. The things that matter to winning. That plays well away from the puck. I don't see that Ryan as that kind of player. And I don't think Ryan is the kind of player the Flyers should be looking for going forward.

I didn't say that you stated that he came back to play for the money. I stated that you brought that up into the conversation. Nobody has stated that he came back for the money. Including me. Which you incorrectly tried to apply to my statements.
