I understand why some fans wouldn't want Ryan and why some fans would. We could hope Voracek takes another big step this season, there is no reason why he can't. One of Simmonds or Schenn could be a nice compliment to Giroux. At the same time though, if the Flyers are looking for the perfect sidekick for Giroux and choose to take on a player outside of the organization, it would seem that Ryan is the only possible available player who might not cost assets.

Just a boatload of cap space. Would he take less than he shot down from Ottawa to come to Philly? Perhaps, but I doubt he takes much less, and he'll probably want a long term, as well.

He'll be 28 in March, which means a 6 year deal takes him age 35. Power forwards ten to start showing signs of decline after 30, and even if he starts it at age 32, that's still three years at a premium cost for a declining player.

The Flyers have plenty of candidates to step in as the first line LW. Schenn. Read. Simmonds. In a couple of years maybe a kid like Aube Kubel could be a candidate.

The only way I'd have interest in Ryan is if Simmonds, Schenn or Voracek was dealt for defense help.

And how do you know that to be a certainty?

How do I know what to be a certainty? You asked me what I thought, I told you.

There was no question in my mind that Timonen was not going to retire yet. Why would he?

An injured player or one with a medical condition that prevents him from playing, does not have to retire. He just simply can't play. And by not retiring, he can collect 2M bucks. It's really not a hard situation to understand. Does Timonen benefit more from not retiring, or from retiring?

He played pretty well for the Wild, better than Brodeur, playing poorly and demanding to start.

He probably won't get more than $1mm or so, and he was a good citizen for the Wild.

I'm guessing Flyers management didn't expect or want him to retire either. Say what you want about Ed Snyder but he always takes care of his good soldiers.

"That Timonen didn't announce his retirement should not surprise. For him to do so right now would shaft the Flyers and guarantee a $2 million salary cap hit this season."

It would help the Flyers a bit, vis a vis the cap, but if Timonen were to retire he not only forfeits $2mm in salary, I'm not sure what kind of access he'd have to team medical facilities and doctors. I realize health care is socialized in Europe, but perhaps the Flyers would be able to send him to specialists or additional resources that he might not have access to in Finland-or would have to pay for himself in the US

I don't think kimmo is concerned about paying for the best healthcare available. I'm sure he can afford anything he needs. I just think it's the Flyer's way. It's like a family thing. You take care of your family.
