Does Phil put up great numbers yes.
Do you think he is in the best shape he can possibly be in. ? I don't. Never have. The article isn't creating anything I didn't already think.
I watch ever single game and he looks winded out there sometimes. More than he should. More than other top tier players.
He is overweight. No one can possibly deny that. I think if he wasn't he would be a better player. That's it. And every player has a responsibility to be doing everything they can to be the best they can.
I guess what I boils down to is I think Phil could be a 45 goal scorer who is content to score 35. Just my sense of the situation. - D.Lemieux
I don't think that Phil is content with anything. Personally I don't see another guy on the team who takes failure more personally than Phil. I think he's a potential 45 goal scorer if he wasn't running on a two-man line |

Tongue-in-cheek is a figure of speech used to imply that a statement or other production is humorously or otherwise not seriously intended, and it should not be taken at face value. The facial expression typically indicates that one is joking or making a mental effort. |

Agreed, he could be lighter and fitter.
Although I saw him in a t shirt last year and he is just one of those guys who is "thick"
Looks like he could bench press a lot of weight, even Carlyle.

Agreed
Phil + 6 months with Gary R + a real number 1 C = 50 goals. |

This is also my take on Kessel as well.
I think he hates losing - not coaches, not Dion, just losing. I think he is a very emotional player on the bench and views the fine line of winning and losing as his responsibility. He knows ownership, coaching staff, teammates and fans look to him to do just that - win games. I don't like Spotts breakout plan either. Knowing Leafs D, they would offer up a few suicide passes to Kessel breaking through the middle and that would be it. Opposing D would love a chance to catch Kessel ripping through the middle to his off wing. The biggest problem I see with the Leafs breakout is talent. Leaf forwards are quick, if the D cannot think, move or act quick enough to pass or carry the puck out when they have possession, the gap becomes too great in very little time, and trouble ensues. Opposing teams loved playing against last years Leafs D. |

How many times do we see kessel fly down the ice by himself and let off a snap shot.
I think this is the reason he always looks tired on the bench. He usually has one last burst down the ice all by himself while his teammates are changing.
I can't think of anyone on the team that does this on a regular basis.
