i dont wanna get into the debate of eberle being locked in and how much that raises his value etc. or cbj being behind the 8ball and a position of weakness. all of these makes value extremely debateable.
but just pure talent and upside, the offer ystoil proposed was not way outta line.
a guy with ryjo's size and skill at center is worth more (possibly a great deal more) than jordan eberle who is a complimentary scoring winger.

He was the number 1c on a perennual powerhouse in junior. Was fantastic for canada at the wjc's and was a lottery pick! Clearly cbj thought he was very special.
6'3 225 with disgusting hands. His skill aint debateable. If he starts using his size and becomes more physical (he plays a skill game for such a big dude) he'll be an elite centerman |

They're in such a tough spot.
If you let him go, Brandon Dubinsky is the #1 center. Let that sink in.
Does Boone Jenner have what it takes to be a #1? Top centers/guys that could be top centers don't grow on trees. They're like the hardest thing to find besides an actual #1 Dman.
They really have to keep him. But he wants to be paid his worth. "Ryan, we're holding the first 2 seasons where you clearly weren't ready for the NHL but we were too stubborn to send you to Junior because we wanted to abuse your bonus cushion as cap hit to save money"
His season puts him in some elite company, and there are far more comparables for guys having that season at 21 and only getting better, with like so few "bust" stories that I'm having a legitimately hard time finding them.
Henrique and Turris are the closest, but Turris has never proven to be a #1 against #1 competition the way Johansen did.
Evander Kane is a pretty decent comparable too. |
