Because he knew that Clb management will balk? Clb management want a contract that when it ends Johansen is still a RFA. It's kind of a typical NHL contract move.

Do highly touted prospects with a high draft pedigree that are developed properly and turn into good players usually fall right off? Nope they don't. And in case you didn't notice with the cap going up salaries are going up too. I'd rather have Johansen at 8.5 than Kane at 11.5

Still tradable on a long term deal, I dont think he wants out but I dont think asking for 8 years means as much as we take it for, its all about getting max amounts now vs waiting to earn it later

They were expected to finish at the bottom. Anybody with a brain in their head knew that a bunch of 18-19 year old kids wasn't going to win. The oilers lost intentionally.
