I'd say he's closer to 2 years away. Isn't this his first pro season?
- johndewar

It is his first season, but goalies often spend 2 or 3 years in the minors.

Exactly. I wasn't really expecting anything from Stolarz ("Stoli the Goalie") until Mason's FA year.

Didn't say he wasn't good at drafting.
- BiggE

I know you didn't. But Since the Carter/Richards trades, Holmgren shifted focus and for the most part committed to a youth build. And all the young players on the Flyers and most of the prospects were acquired by Holmgren.

Some thoughts of the game yesterday....

. I was mildly disappointed when they picked Sanheim. I really thought they needed a skilled forward......

I've been critical of the Flyers drafting after the 1st round. Now, my criticism goes back at least 3 or 4 years, so I think it was fair at the time. But Holmgren really gets some props for the 2012 & 2013 drafts, and of course Hexy for last year......

I still wish we would have taken Maata.

- TheGreat28

IMO

In 2012 if Teravainen wasnt taken 2 spots before Laughton we would have picked him.

In 2013 if Nichushkin wasnt taken 1 spot ahead of Morin, we would have picked him.

In 2014 if Milano wasnt taken 1 spot ahead of Sanheim we would have picked him.

what I'm saying is, I think Flyers brass drafts best player available, and our prospect core could have looked a lot more forward heavy had those drafts turned out a tiny bit different...

I wouldn't touch Ryan unless he agreed to a Stastny type deal. I'm not as much worried about the number as much as the years. He seems like the type of player you'd much rather have for the first 8 years than the next 8 years

I don't think we have the information to make that statement. For example, if Milano was available, and the Flyers felt Sanheim was the better player, they still would have taken Sanheim.

The #Flyers have released the following players from NHL Amateur Try-Outs: Nikita Jevpalovs, Louick Marcotte, and Beau Rusk.

Not that every guy has to be a Bob Clarke clone, but Ryan's not exactly known for his compete level and attention to detail at both ends either. He's more of a cherry on top when the rest of your sundae is all ready to go, versus an actual foundational building block.

I did preface with "IMO"

I think it was last year, there was a photo pf Flyers draft board circulating on HF and people filled in the list.. let me see if I can dig that out

I agree, not a good enough all around player to get involved with in that kind of deal. Which could escalate even higher in a bidding war among teams.

With all the money they committed to Bryz, Bob simply wasn't going to play and he wasn't going to stay here past his contract to be Bryz's backup.

And I remember my visceral reaction to the JvR trade was: Is that all we got back? I didn't mind trading JvR, per se. I always felt they should have gotten more back.

- johndewar

At the time.... JVR much like Schenn was a project. Both showed flashes of greatness. We needed defense badly. AT THE TIME it was a pretty even deal. I believe the verdict is still out on L.Schenn and I also believe what you see from JVR is the best he is ever going to be. I was never really fond of his skill set. "Power Forward" that plays a finesse game and doesnt have a very accurate shot.....

That's my point. Who the Flyers would've taken would be based on their opinion at the time obviously.

I'm not so sure about the Teravainen pick. Some said they were "reaching" with Laughton with Maata et al on the board so it seems to me that he was the guy they wanted and even with Teravainen there, they may have still selected Laughton. I think they also take Sanheim a spot earlier. He was another guy some analysts considered a reach. I do agree with Nichushkin. From reports, they liked him a lot and if he fell to 11 they would have had a hard time not selecting him.

I'm glad that we don't have to go through the trouble of figuring out how to pronounce Marcotte's first name or the reason why his parents jammed him up with that spelling of his name.

I think JVR is a good player that is vastly overrated by many. Schenn has take the next step, and then the trade will be worthwhile. But Schenn's grace period is just about over.

All I know is Schenn had more playoff goals than JVR last year.

I always found Brian Burke accusing Bobby Ryan of being too "laid back" kinda funny considering he traded for JvR.

I know we needed defense and that the market for d-men was and is tough. I just felt like, for a one to one trade, we didn't come out with enough assets or the better player.

Aside from hopefully becoming more consistent, I'm not super confident there is a next step Schenn22 will take.

That trade was made over 3 years ago and I do agree that it was fairly even at the time although Schenn was relatively worse in terms of actual play than JVR. But both had oodles of potential. I also agree that JVR isn't going to get much better. 30 goals, 60 points will be the average for him IMO, which is nothing to spit at but he won't be the "next LeClair" or any of that. Schenn needs to figure it out fast or he'll just be a third pairing defenseman who bounces around the league for 10 years.

I see a few scenarios if Stolarz turns into an NHL Starter

1) One the goalies becomes trade bait if both play at a high level consistently
2) Mason becomes back-up if his play tails off for one reason or another
3) Stolarz doesn't re-sign with the Flyers when he is eligible for UFA status

- NickTheKid87

He won't be eligible for UFA status till 2021 at the earliest... I wouldn't worry about it for now.

I'm not worried, I'm just throwing out possible scenarios if he turns into a #1 goalie. It may not even come to that.
