the simple fact is that methot is not worth 5.5 mil. people are looking at him through the same "goggles" they viewed kuba. that is, he was playing alongside one of the best d-men in the entire league, and as a result appeared to be better than he actually was.
if ottawa was to pair methot with ANYONE on this team not named karlsson, and people would see that he was AT BEST an average #3 or good #4 d-man.

The problem is that what a player is 'worth' in terms of salary is market-drive, not value-driven - scarcity drives up price, and you wind up with Brooks Orpik making $5.5M/yr. And if you look at the UFA list of defencemen for next year, you'll see why Methot's agent is conducting himself in this fashion. There are 24 defenceman on that list currently making $3M or more, of which just 6 are currently under the age of 30 - Staal, Green, Meszaros, Petry, Franson, and Methot.

Now I'm not sure that Methot would actually ever get $5.5M/yr on the UFA market, but I can sure see why it might be starting point of a more ambitious negotiation.

Regarding reports Bobby Ryan turned down 7 x $7M from OTT, my understanding is not only did Ryan NOT turn it down, it was never offered.

honestly, i don't think bogosian, other than age, is much better than methot.......if he even is better than methot.
