Here's another huge problem I have with advanced analytics: it's based upon absolute garbage numbers.
Do you know who was second in the NHL in hits last year?
Cody Franson.
Yeah, that's quality data. - Atomic Wedgie
Such a stupid stat.. I'd rather recieve 200 franson hits than 1 Kronwall hit. |

I agree, and I think there is benefits for using advanced stats. But if Kadri makes a nice toe-drag deke to score a goal I don't want to hear about how that goal was scored because of a bunch of numbers. It's kinda like people care less about the game and more about being a detective solving cases.. To each their own I guess. - Arctic_AARDVARK
Are you talking about this goal?

They had a good system.
But no one to score goals.
There's this thing called "talent" that is also part of the equation. - Pecafan Fan
There's thing thing called talent eh? Leafs have no talent on the backend who can actually play defense other than Dion. He needs a partner...
So.. why are people still blaming the coach, and not looking at the talent of our defense when it comes to actually defending?
And if I really wanted to, I could easily turn around and say its the coaches fault NJ didnt score goals. Their system is a defensive trap system. Offense is their last concern. |

It isnt Deboers fault NJ couldnt score goals because they lacked offensive talent.
But its Carlyles fault our D couldnt defend even tho our D lacked defensive talent?
Anyone see whats wrong with this? And dont bother telling me 'A system can cover up crappy Dmen', because thats a load of crap. |

You can learn to play defense within a system.
Learning to score goals? Yeah, good luck with that. |

this is good if you read it..but from your posts you wont
http://www.thescore.com/news/580411
No team allowed fewer shots than the Devils’ 25.5 per-game average, which translated into 2.38 goals against per game, sixth best in the league. They managed this feat despite finishing last in the NHL in blocked shots, which highlights how few attempts they allowed.
The problem: the numbers looked the same at the other end. They had the third-lowest shots-for total (26.8), while their 2.4 goals per game ranked 27th overall. They were shutout 10 times, a number surpassed by zero teams.

Bringing it back to maybe it wasn't all RC maybe some of it was the talent, or the players not sticking to the system.... |

Give him a one year deal at $3M. If he plays well again pay up or trade him.
Those 6 and 8 year deals are a joke. |

I dont care to get into it, but the way hockey works is like this:
gm
coach
players
fans
the gm makes the team
the coach makes the game plan/play style with the players the gm gives him
the players play their best game according to the coaches game plan
the fans cheer on the players and chirp them accordingly - which goes hand in hand with the coaching staff
therefore, everyone is to blame. the end.

I think it's fair to say the leafs weakness was defence, and the Devils weakness was offence. Rielly and Gardiner have boat loads of talent and will sharpen up their defensive game with time. Robidas helps.. |
