So, I think Josh Leivo could make this team this year. Thought he was the best player in that tournament.
- mykokes

I don't. Not because he wasnt good enough, but because there isnt much room for him.

Its only a matter of time before a spot opens up though. Lupul will probably be injured within the first 2 weeks.

Good thing they only signed 20 bottom-sixers to one way deals

He'll most likely be the first call-up.. I doubt he makes it. I like what I see from him though.

That's an anecdote compared to a full season of data (nearly 3000 shots against).
There are variables, of course. But the fact is, more shots against = less possession = more goals against.

As shown by nothing more than the leafs record and basic statistics available on nhl.com

Montreal shots against ranked 22nd but goals against 8th
Colorado 25th and 15th

Speed. Alot of the west teams actually have issues with speed. Its why the Leafs didn't do so bad against the big bad pacific teams....though San Jose plays a system that shutsdown the leafs perimeter play.

As for Montreal: An unorthodox attack, speed. P.K. Subban as a quarterback, is a very hard player to defend against.

Both instances the offense finds a way to capitalize on defensive breakdowns.

Also both teams had great goaltending.

Marty, I know the Leafs gave up too many shots, that is very evident watching the game, I can also tell you that 10 to 15 of those shots were garbage shots. But they also gave up many excellent quality shots which resulted in goals against. I'm just saying, I don't really need an adv. stat to tell me that, some may need it and that is fine but it should be very noticeable when watching the game.

If people don't think I know hockey and that I don't understand the game is evolving, well...

well, to be fair, not a lot of NHL talent in that tournament on any team. He damn well SHOULD be one of the best in the tourney if he wants a career.

but agreed he looks ready to make a run at camp.
tough sledding though, especially since he is waiver exempt and pretty much everybody he's fighting for a job with is not.

This happened with Gardiner.

Good puck possession numbers. Adv stats crowd loves him. But if you watched the game, you'd know that he'd take the puck behind his net, skate up to the blueline, circle back and carry the puck for another 10 seconds..

- jbold

you do know that this has nothing to do with the possession we (or at least me) are talking about.

But look at the numbers.

Montreal allowed 400 less shots on goal than the Leafs.

You did. Colorado also had a lot of finishers, (shooting percentage hehe) with their speed.

I think that's why you guys lost to the Rangers, they were one of the few teams that are faster than yours.

This. I fear that this whole analytics thing is changing the conversation to stupid pointless numbers instead of what you see with your own eyes. Every night after a win or loss it's just going to be idiots in here rambling about numbers trying to establish themselves as "analytics gurus". It's already getting to that point.

And Carey Price.

I think the team as a whole didn't react well to the loss of their #1 goalie. Morale was affected, I think.

Too many people on one way deals ahead of him.

Maybe after a few trades, I could see him getting a game or two.

Unless he's real awesome in pre-season.
